Do you guys know if you can move from an MD school to a DO school. I am not talking about transfering, I am talking about basically starting over. Is there any regulations that prohibit this? The basic story is I need to move back home for various reasons, but I do have to return home and the only school in the area is osteopathic (I would have chosen a DO school anyway). Thanks.

No, you'd have to submit an application (AACOMAS) to the school, and your admission will be at their sole discretion. I think your only obligation is disclosing which schools you have attended in the past and present. Calling the school and reasoning your situation can go a long way.

Why not atleast try to get credit though?

Didn't think that was possible? I of course haven't had any OMM, but plenty of biochem, phys, embry, anatomy, and histology. I guess I could try that, I ddn't think they would allow a transfer from an allopathic school.

Why don't you contact the school and talk to the admission dean? The school in question, will be able to give you the best information.

Great idea, I plan to. I wanted to make sure that there were not rules that stated that you couldn't do this first. For some reason, I was thinking that once you start one school, you cannot attend another unless transfering. Is this not the case?

I think you can transfer from MD to DO school. Each school has their own requirements so you'll have to contact the school.

Great, thanks. I hope you are right. I plan on contacting the school very soon.

I second the above advice...call the school and tell them your situation. Med schools generally don't like accepting other med school 'drop outs' since they think if you can't hack it at one med school, chances are you won't at another one. But you are a special case since it isn't academic, but personal reasons, you need to move. I'm sure the deans can at least understand your situation and find some way to accommodate them. And I don't think it will hurt for you to ask for a transfer, saves money and time for you.

I 2nd the comment on calling the osteopathic school directly. Ask to speak to someone in the office of the dean of admissions. If this is your first year, maybe the the school has a summer OMT program that will allow you to make up the semester of OMM that you have missed out on.

why would you think that? it doesnt even make any sense. that would be like saying once you do a year of college somewhere, you can never go anywhere else. all educational systems are businesses first and foremost. they'll take as many applicants as they can get. those $100 processing fees add up, you know. besides, you'd probably have a successful first year, and they'd get tuition money from a student they dont have to worry about or offer to many services to. you're like the ideal candidate. plus you're switching MD to DO- heck, they'll probably use you in local commercials as a marketing gimic (gimmick?)

There are at least two students in my class ,DO, who matriculated at our school after one year at an MD school. They both had to start as first year students. I would be pretty surprised if a DO school would let an allopathic student transfer in as a second year. There are likeley to be differences in the "regular" curriculum and then there is the OMM.

i think it depends on the school - at my school several students deffered at the last moment leaving some slots open (i assume) and several students are on a "5 year" plan so you may be able to get credit for some courses and have to track first year for others...in the end you will have to call the school but you could start at their website and look up the student handbook and get some basic info....

I am almost certain you cannot transfer in from an MD school here, however, I am also pretty certain you can receive credit for equivalent classes you have taken and skip some of those, some of my classmates did this. If you get excused from half of your first year classes you could even work during that year or do research so it is not time wasted for sure.

Actually, at UMDNJ-SOM students have transferred from MD schools into the program. If this is the school you are interested in. The person PM me and I will give you the name of the contact person you should speak to. Good luck!
