Hi,
I was very fortunate to be accepted into Columbia for the upcoming cycle. This would be the first time I'm moving out, and was wondering if anyone had tips/advice for my first time moving out. I'm not sure what I need to buy, or what to expect considering I never lived in the East Coast or away from my parents.

Any advive for my first year of dental school would also be much appreciated. Thanks!

Hey!
This is also my first time moving out. Since I'm staying in graduate housing, I don't need to buy any furniture, just actual cooking supplies and decorations.

Will you be living in graduate housing or in an apartment?

Hey! It was also my first time moving out. Keep in mind it can be really hard the first week or two, coming home to an empty apartment and it being dead silent. For the east coast, buy appropriate clothing. It gets cold af. Buy beanies, boots, thick coats, thermals, etc. It's better to be bundled in layers that you can remove, than to be freezing. For moving away from your parents, bring pictures to put up in your room! Also bring important documents like your passport, social security card, etc.

Things to buy would be basic necessities, like cooking utensils/pots/pans/dishes, bedsheets & comforters & pillows, rugs, an iron if you need one etc. Since you have plenty of time, I would look closely at your day-to-day and see what you use and write it down so you can start making a list. For paper goods/consumables (detergent, paper towels, toilet paper, etc), decide if you're going to split these costs with your roommate/housemate (if you have one) or if you'll keep everything separate.

If your apartment is furnished, that's really nice. If not, you're gunna have to buy a bed, couch, bookshelves, dining table + chairs, desk + chair, etc.

I googled moving out lists/what to buy when you're moving out/etc and looked at a whole bunch of sites to come up with a good, solid list and it worked out well 🙂

Thank you guys!
I'm not sure out where I'm moving out too yet, but I believe I'm going to look for graduate housing. I'm going to start comparing prices this week for grad housing and off campus and see what is most ideal for me

Y'all need to ask for some Canada goose for a starting dental school present.

If there is someone in your life that is willing to give you a $1,000+ dollar present, you need to ask for that in cash because you will be able to buy a cheaper coat that works just as well and still pay rent for a month.

I did not know coats could even cost that much. Does layering not work in canada?

I'm a fan of keeping dental students broke. Not only do you need Canada goose, you need to rent luxury apartments only. If Kylie Jenner can live it up, so can you.
