I'm not sure what is the appropriate forum to ask this question, so with many of us about to move away for school, and possibly with similar issues, I figure this is as good a place as any.

I am trying to organize my stuff for my move to Georgia. I've made a lot of headway, but I have one slight problem:

I am in possession of about five boxes of my mom's ****. Its a long story, but basically, I told her she could keep it with me for a while, and she never got around to getting it back (she lives in NYC). Mostly papers and stuff like that. A few worthless family heirlooms that are important to her are in there too, along with some delicate china dishes that are probably pretty expensive.

What is the best (i.e., cheapest) way for me to get this **** to her? Can I send it COD so that she can cover the cost of the shipping?

Toss a book or cheap DVD in each box and send them Media Mail. I think that's the cheapest USPS method of shipping. Not sure about the COD thing...

I think UPS' COD is to collect payment, not shipping charges. This might be how they all are. This would cost you $9 extra and would be the same as her sending you a check to cover costs.

The cheapest way is probably Greyhound (all except the family heirlooms since those might be irreplaceable). This is how I always used to ship stuff. It's fairly inexpensive to load your boxes on one of their buses where you are and then pick it up at the Greyhound station where you're going. Just be advised, pay a few extra bucks to buy insurance for the items. I shipped a box full of beautiful winter coats (about $800 worth of coats) once and they "lost" it.

Chocolate bear, can you elaborate on the necessity of placing a book or a CD in a box? So say I have a box full of clothes and other personal stuff, I cannot ship it as media mail, but if I put a couple of books, they will let me ship it as media mail? Thanks.

LOL! The USPS says Media Mail is a good way to send books, DVDs, and things of that nature. It's generally among the cheapest ways to mail packages, although it may be the slowest. However, I have had a Media Mail package beat a 1st class mail package to the same destination, so it's probably not much slower, if at all.

Technically and honestly, you couldn't mail a box of clothes via Media Mail, but they wouldn't check. If you had some ratio of clothes and DVDs (or books, etc.), it might seem more ethically justifiable to utilize the cheaper method.

A lot of what I am sending is books and pictures. It seems that this is what I will bw using to send those things.

The dishes will be different, but not too heavy.

usps media mail is cheap, but if you're not going media mail (which can be a little slow), the next cheapest (especially for big boxes) is UPS ground.

i have a few items I'm sending UPS ground bc it's cheaper than USPS or checking it in on my flight. good luck!
