Not sure if this is the right forum to post this question but I figure this might be relevant to lots of people here...

I will probably have to move across multiple states for my residency, and I have heard that there are lots of scams with moving companies, etc. Does any of you know which company is a good one to hire? And how much does it typically cost?

Thanks!

Depends where you're moving from/to, mileage, how much stuff you have to move, are you doing all the packing or are they, etc. Far too many variables to give an estimate. See if AMSA or your school has a discount in effect. Get several estimates. And look into PODs. They're awesome. And cheap. I'm moving a 3BR house full of stuff (with full basement and garage) over 1000 miles away for about $5K.

To answer your question, it is going to be WAAAAYYY more expensive than you think. Moving a 3BR house cross-country with one of the big (i.e. not scammer) movers can run you $5-10K. If you're moving less than that (like the usual med student 1BR, college furniture stuff) there are much cheaper options like PODS, U-Pak, Rental Trucks and selling all your crap, loading what's left in your trunk and buying new furniture when you get there.

Very helpful threads! Thanks a lot!! 👍👍
