You guys,

i'm having the biggest dilemma. I got accepted as an undeclared post bac student to CSU Hayward but i live in soCal which means i gotta move. I have 2 weeks to decide! The thing is, be as honest as possible, do you think it is worth the move for fulfilliing pre reqs when i could just take them at a JC? Is it true that the JC classes will take longer and don't appear to be as competitive? I was overqualified for CSUFullerton cuz i took more than 6 units worth of science already, so got rejected. I don't meet the requirements for the UCI and UCLA cuz i didn't take the MCATs yet. I can't afford, Scripps or USC at least not for pre-med. But i thot of cal state long beach, and i passed the deadline. What do you guys think?

not worth it in my opinion. with long beach and fullerton around there's no reason to move up north for something like that. you should try again. in the meantime try open enrollment at a university and/or a JC if your previous gpa is strong to begin with (if not, open enrollment all the way).

you may not qualify for the program at UCLA but what about taking extension classes?

i would recommend just taking classes through extension at UC Irvine or UCLA. and take like 12 units a quarter of upper division biology courses. it's pretty much the same as doing a formal postbac, but without the certificate....just my thoughts....good luck!

Yeah i was thinking of doing that and then i saw the price, plus they dont have all the classes i need. The problem is guys, is that i took most of the pre reqs already. i should only take upper division courses. I have two weeks to decide before i move! It sucks. I spoke with the director at UCDavis and UC San Diego, they both said what you said. Take 12 units worth of upper division bio, don't take anymore classes at the JC. Don't u think it's too late to enroll in them now?

Do you think it's bad that i just take the MCATs and apply, then get rejected and try to get into the UCLA Re App one? It's a big risk but moving up north for a post bac, is it really worth it?

have you taken parasitology, immunology, endocrinology and microbiology at uc irvine yet??? those would be great classes to take at UC irvine as your upper division courses....i think they probably have more upper division courses since i've been there so check out the list of classes in the catalogue. UC Irvine doesn't start til end of september, so you have about 2 weeks at most to start enrolling. i think it's great timing, so you're not too late. plus, i think with extension, you get last priority to enroll so you have an extra few days. (i heard the school gives priority to registered full time students first, and then they allow extension students to enroll by the end of the first week???something like that...)

i wouldn't take the chances of applying just to get rejected so that u can apply to the UCLA post bac. that's a risk, and plus you want to apply to medical school ONLY when u are ready and have done everything u can to make your application look good. b/c when u re-apply, they're gonna ask you what you have done to improve yourself. to me , i just dont think it's worth it...instead of doing UCLA formal post bac, why dont you just take the extension courses there?

good luck!!!

I took postbac classes at CSU Long Beach last year and I loved it...I know someone on here recommended UCI but honestly, the cost of one extension course at UCI is the same as a full courseload as open university student at Long Beach. I spent around $3500 (give or take a couple $100) for the entire year. Plus, at UCI you can only take 2 courses per quarter as extension whereas at Long Beach you can take as many units as you want and they don't check for pre-reqs either. I established a really good rapport with the professors there and they are very willing to help you in any way they can...extra office hours...answering emails in a timely manner....go over material in class if even 1 person does not understand or is confused. I found the learning environment to mimic that of the med-school courses that I am taking. If I were you I would just go open university at Long Beach and then apply for spring entrance (deadline is OCT I think??).

thanks guys, but guess what? i'm already up here. I read the threads a little too late.

UCLA and UCI extension courses dont offer ll the courses i need to take as a full time. i went to UCI for my undergrad and getting into those upper div courses as an extension student is hard.

I was seriously thinking about cal state long beach but it was about 1.5 week too late to take the extension courses. I'm planning on applying there for the spring and hopefully transfer back down there. But CSU hayward is a quarter system, so i'd get more upper division bio courses completed within the year.
