Hey,

I was just looking for opinions on how people are relocating to their new homes for residency. I have a list of apartments I am going to check out in the next few weeks. Once that is settled I guess I have to think about moving stuff from my apartment to wherever I end up. I looked at Uhaul and found out it would cost me 600 dollars to rent to move stuff from Boston to Pittsburgh. That is expensive! I really don't have that much stuff, maybe a kitchen table, my bed, and desk for big items and boxes. At 600 and paying for gas, it almost makes it not worth it to rent out the 600 uhaul. Can someone reccommend a different company to go via that is not that expensive? I really don't want to get rid of my stuff. I think a couple hundred dollars is reasonable. I don't think I need a uhaul trailer, I think a big truck or van would be sufficent. Has people tried just renting out via budget or something? Any input would be great!

A cargo van sounds like it would be a better fit for you. The thing that is hurting you price wise is the one way rental. If there is a huge difference between one way and return rental, consider driving the van back and then taking the train or a flight to other city.

Vans usually have unlimited mileage and a fixed rate. You don't need a uhaul.

I thought everybody knew to avoid U-Haul. They're always the most expensive, have the worst service and, more often than not, don't have the truck you reserved when you get there.

I'm going w/ Penske for my move from Brooklyn to Portland, OR (as I did the last 2 times I moved, once from St. Louis to NYC and once in the city from Manhattan to Brooklyn). The price difference between Penske and UHaul for that move is almost $2000.

For your move, the smallest truck each company rents (not including taxes and fees and assuming a random date of 6/15...YMMV depending on date):
UHaul: $660 - 10 ft.
Budget: $625 - 10ft.
Penske: $584 - 12ft (it goes down to $514 if you're a AAA member which costs $59 to join so may not be worth the trouble if you don't have a car).

Nobody rents vans one-way so you have to go with a small truck. The idea of doing a local rental and just driving back might not be such a good one. A cargo van from UHaul goes for $19.95 plus $0.59/mile...at 1200 miles round trip that works out to $728 which is $60-200 more than the one way trip and doesn't include the one-way flight back. Renting a van from a regular rental place may be cheaper but it'll be harder to find...not a lot of places have them.

For my money, Penske's the way to go.

Good luck with the move. We just got our lease agreement today and are psyched to be finally able to say we have a place to live.

I used penske to move from Mpls to Chicago and it cost about $400 plus gas. They were a couple hundo cheaper than U-haul, and had WAY newer trucks. This was for a 14 foot truck, but they have cargo vans as well. You might get to the point, though, where it's cheaper to sell your big items and buy new in the next city if you can avoid extra moving costs...

for me, moving (self or hire) is more expensive than the stuff i've got, so i'm selling or dumping it all and only mailing the bare necessities ups ground, $50 for a large 70lbs box shipped across country i think is a good bargain.

I agree with others about Penske. I rented from them last year to move from Kansas City to Sacramento; the rental was several hundred dollars cheaper than u-haul, the truck was about a year old, and the service was great. The car dolly I reserved wasn't available until a day later, so they knocked off about a third from my total rental. I think I paid about $800 + gas for the entire move. Try that from U-haul.
Getting ready to move again soon, to Portland, OR; much cheaper move
Hey Brooklyneric, where're you headed in Portland? I'm going to Legacy Emanuel for IM.

Penske is a TON more reliable (vehicle-wise) also. One day, I rented a U-haul for an in-town thing. We ended up going through 3 TRUCKS. Broke down in the middle of the street.

Penske....moved from San Antonio to Washington, DC without a hitch.

get rid of everything you have and buy stuff when you get there

Believe it or not, but after an extensive online search (craigslist and more), I eventually found our new apartment in the good old newspaper add, bought the morning of my endeavours to go and visit the 10 internet-found places.

I even looked at 2 more acceptable places found in this tiny local paper that is mainly made to deliver local grocery shop news to the surrounding neighbourhoods.
So never underestimate newspaper adds.
For moving you might also want to to upack.com and broadway express.

using penske to move from Ohio to NYC. Cost $380.00 for a 16 ft truck. Would have been cheaper if I was a AAA member.

Better late than never. Been on vacation for 18 days, home just in time for graduation (36 hours before) and I've been packing like crazy for the past 4 days.

I'm heading to OHSU for IM/Med Onc Research Pathway.

Where did you end up finding a place to live? We had a harder time than we expected but ended up with a great place (3BR house 2 blocks from the river) in John's Landing.

Just to drag this thread out even longer....

If you're moving w/ a rental truck, be sure to keep checking back to see if the rate has changed. When I first made my Penske reservation in mid-April, a 22' truck and car trailer cost almost $3400. A few weeks later I was trying to decide if I could get away with a smaller truck and priced things out again and was greeted with a $2900 price for the 22'/trailer. On Saturday I did the same thing and the price was down to $2650 for the same thing.

So for about 30 minutes of work I managed to save $850 which seems like a pretty good deal. Should pay for some of the gas anyway.

No one has mentioned using door-to-door moving crates. I chose to use this b/c I hate moving trucks (tendency to brake down, inability to drive faster than 65-70 mph, parking, etc). I moved from San Francisco to Philadelphia and the door-to-door crate (8'x7'x5') was ~1400. An additional crate would have been a total of `2000.

I drove my car with my wife and was able to stop off at cool places, visit friends along the way, and drive 80mph on average and did so at 35mpgallon.

May be a little bit more expensive, but way less stressful.

I guess since we're listing anecdotal stories:

Penske one-way rental $650

U-Haul one-way rental $105

Guess which one I picked. and the truck was ready on time.

Wow, you guys are getting cheap rentals.

-One-way Florida to Louisiana, 22' truck and tow dolly, AAA discount
U-Haul-~1K
Ryder/Budget-950
Penske-1350

Went with Penske and had them pricematch Ryder. No way I'm doing Uhaul. Everytime I've used them in the past, I always hear the "Sanford & Son" theme in my head the whole time.
