I am an MFT-Intern in the state of California with about 1000 hours completed towards my license. My husband accepted a position in Reno as a firefighter, so we will be moving there within the next few months. I called the licensing board of Nevada and they have no reciprocity between MFT Interns in California and Nevada. They stated that I would need to re-register in the state of Nevada and petition to the board to have my hours accepted in Nevada, which I have read may be a difficult process. I'm concerned that they would not accept my hours because they were supervised under LCSW's and not MFT's.

Although it may be a simple process to re-register in the state of NV, I am concerned that it may take a while until my hours are accepted with the board or not accepted at all. I am even thinking of commuting to CA from Reno in order to complete my hours and receive my license in CA.

Has anyone had experience with this? Do you know if there are many opportunities in Reno for MFT Interships? Would I be better off pursuing an LPCC? Any advise would be much appreciated.

Am confused about this. If there's no between-state reciprocity for accumulation of hours, is there reciprocity between states for licensure?

Wish you luck whatever you decide.

What Em is talking about is pre-licensure hours. After full licensure, reciprocity is much easier.

That's a tough one. I think I would probably be considering your two choices as well--commute and finish (and get licensed in CA, then get full license in NV) vs. start all over with hours. I think it depends on how the hours will be accumulated, i.e., can you find a decent job in NV? It might not matter too much in that case.

I also think that considering an LPCC makes sense. Would they accept your degree and training? In many states (besides CA, obviously), it can be a more flexible license.

Thank you for your advise. I believe I may just continue to receive hours in CA for my license. I may pursue the LPCC so that I am more portable as a clinician, I just hope that one day CA will be more willing to accept the national standard.

CA does have a new LPC, but I don't think it's widely acknowledged yet, and from what I've read, there's quite a wait to get licensed. I guess it'll be worth tracking to see how this develops in the future (not that that helps the OP's current situation much...).

I am also a registered MFT Intern in California and am interested in relocating to Reno for personal reasons. Since I have only 500 hours left to acquire I've decided to stay focused on getting licensed in ca. Hopefully that will make the transition to Nevada licensure less of a hassle. I'm very interested in learning how your situation pans out. What steps does an MFT from California need to take to work as a psychotherapist in Nevada?
