Moving to the area around NYU

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi
So I was admitted into the '11 class, and now, 3 weeks after knowing that, i'm still in denial!
Anyway, i'm really looking forward to meeting you all and beginning classes in August. However, i'm concerned about finiding a place to live. I prefer to live somewhere in manhattan that's not so far away from the school such that i won't have to wake up too early every morning (yes because im lazy like that). So i was searching on real estate w/sites on the internet and i found really great apartements. But in order to afford these places i will need to share it with a roommate (each will have to pay $800-1200/month),

so, if you know someone who's coming to new york around that time hook me up with them. I'll move in there mid may after spring finals are over.

I'll be 21 next may, single, no kids (just if you were wondering!), smoking on occassions, no pets, and very laid back.

email me at ********* or pm me.. thanks.

Which part of manhattan are you planning to live in?

The school is located in the east village district, so i'm looking there and on surrounding areas, i.e. greenwich village/soho, lower east side, gremarcy park.. etc.

Actually, I believe you're thinking of the main NYU campus which is located in the east village (by Greenwich, Soho, lower east side, etc.)
But the dental school is further uptown and also all the way on the east side (in the Murray Hill/Gramercy area).

how r you going to pay rent and do good in dental school at the same time. I mean if you can more power to you. I have a hard time working in undergrad no way will I be able to work in D_school unless people were lying to me when they said it was harder than what I'm doing now.

pay rent? you take out loans for that.. no difference in how it gets paid whether you move into housing provided by your school of choice or an apartment you find on your own.

Interesting, I guess thats why people are afraid of going so deep in debt, but.... if your successful at being a dentist and make the decision to hold off on that maybach your first year then I guess paying loans will be an easy thing. New York will be a cool place to live while going to dental school. And I encourage anybody to follow their dreams. But on the same note I feel I wouldn't be able to fully enjoy NYC if I was in dental school, and on the flip side if I am having fun in NYC then maybe that means I'm not doing good in dental school.

As many professional students do. . .study hard, party hard.

Exactly!!! By no means will D-school be a breeze like undergrad, but if you work hard, I'm thinking you will have plenty of time to enjoy yourself as well. So just because our weekends won't start on wednesday night anymore, doesn't mean you'll be in your books 24-7.

This is why I'm loving the prospect of living in NYC or Chicago for the next 4 years 🙂

just dorm it your first year...thats what most people do. You get to know people, dont have to worry about the hassle of finding a place so you can focus on getting through the first year. Thats what i'm doin anyway...dorm style. Worry about finding a place when D1 is over.

I know I've certainly had enough with the dorm experience too 🙁 but I'm going to try to dorm it the first semester -- at least just until I get used to the city. One less thing to worry about. Plus, it'll be a lot easier to meet all the cool people that I'll be studying with all the time!

Excited to meet you guys though. q8ty, remember to invite us all over to your new digs 😉

youre goin to nyu😕

well i am a new yorker also planning to attend nyu this coming year, and for out of state people, nyc is extremely expensive especially midtown and under. so if you want, u can get a place in the upper east side / west side and take the train, the places are cheaper around 1000 for a two room apartment, if u split that you will pay less but will have to do some traveling. NYU only provides housing for first year only then they kick u out, so its better to find a place before i guess.

Well, I'm going to NYC 🙂 Unlike yourself, I don't have the luxury (or patience) to go through this process again if I don't get any love from the upper part of that island of yours.

Hey guys,
Congrates for ur admission to NYU. I also got my acceptance letter today from NY, would u please tell me the reason why did u guys decide to go to NY..I live in CA and wanna stay here, but I didn't hear anything back from CA schools sofar...Ny is my back up plan, what about u guys...Is NY ur first choice?
Thx in advance.

hey guys.

i was just wondering if anyone is shooting for the 26th street apartments. does anyone know how to sign up for these and if you need a roommate, etc. any feedback would definitely help. thanks and see ya in august! 🙂

I'm debating between dorming and renting a place... got a D1 friend living in 26th St who says it's not great but convenient. I care about convenience, proximity, safety, and being around other dental students for the 1st two years coz I'm def the type of student who needs to be around other people when studying, ie if I don't understand the material, I need to be able to walk down the hall or down a block to find a classmate who can help me figure it out.

Does anyone know if it's imperative to live near NYU once we reach the 3rd year? I'm from NJ and might consider moving home once the clinical years start to save $$... but don't know if I can handle an hour and a half commute each way every day.

I think that living in the 26th street dorms is a good idea for the first year. Unfortunately those dorms are not guaranteed. If you apply for housing and don't get the 26th street dorms then I would be pretty pissed since the reason behind living there is that it is extremely close to the school and ud be with other D1s and you cant get back ur deposit if u want to find off campus housing.

Anyone know if NYU has married housing?

I was thrilled each time I made it to NYC, but can't really imagine how you guys are going to manage yourselves with D-school there. Anyway, congrats to everyone who's NYU bound this year.

Is it possible to only commit to living in NYU campus housing for just the first semester? Or do we have to agree to live there for the full year?

im not sure but it seems like there is a one year committment considering the prices are shown per year

...just checked; if you want to live in NYU housing you have to agree to live there for the entire academic year. That blows!
