Where do you live and where are you moving? I'm also moving from the South to the Northeast (FL to VA). It's a little scary but I'm excited! There will be a whole class full of new pharmacy students in the same boat as you so try not to get too freaked out!
If you have the money and time, try to take a trip and visit the area where you'll live just to get familiar with everything. I have made a few trips up to Winchester and it makes me feel like I kind of know where I'm headed. Good luck! :luck: 😍

I'm moving from cali to maryland...pretty excited since I've never lived in the east coast before. So I'm guessing you decided on UMB 🙂

I'm moving from New Jersey to California (Touro)!!! I'm very excited but also nervous at the same time. I've been to northern CA a few times but it's a totally different feeling to know I'm moving to such a different part of the country. And I have to admit, I'm a little scared of the earthquakes!

Guys,
I moved first to New York, then to Chicago from RUSSIA 3 years ago. Believe me, it is much worse🙂 You'll be fine!!! You speak the same language, you move with in the same country🙂

hey me too from fl to maryland. Hey by the way were you at the interview there in feb?

Hey all, I'm moving from a tiny town in Missouri to a suburb of Boston!! I'm really just worried about the cold, I've never been to a place where snow stays on the ground, so I will have to figure all of that out. Plus I'm moving there by myself (ultra scary!!). My boyfriend of 4 1/2 years decided he didn't want to move so I will have no one to fall back on when I get stressed out, etc. But hey, I'm sure it will be great andI just can't wait to get out of my pointless classes in undergrade and actually start studying pharmacy!!

I'll be moving from sunny san diego to cold michigan! I'm really excited though! I'm increasing my winter clothes right now. I really wanted to get out of california for four years and experience the outside first before coming back to work. Never really been outside of cali. so it'll be a great experience =). I"m in the same situation as astevens, my bf of 4 1/2 years isnt' coming with me either.... i hope the relationship will work out =T.

i'm pretty excited! =)

i just don't know how im going to move everything

So far....I'm planning to move from sunny california to illinois. It'll be my first time living outside of California....lived in SF all my life. I'm waiting for one more school, but I am pretty much set on going east. My boyfriend doesn't want me to do a cross country drive...thinks I'm insane. However, he is heading east as well (NY for one year and Maryland for another 3 yrs)...I guess I'll be closer to him, but I won't be able to get some comfort when I am stressed out.

Anyone driving cross country, or are you just shipping your belongings and flying there?

I'm driving (not cross country) but still from central FL to northern VA... it's about 19 hours according to google maps.
You're not crazy! A road trip will be fun!

hey dreamingpharm. I'm also moving from SF to Chicago. did you decide to go to Midwestern? Similar to you, my boyfriend is already in the midwest (chicago too).
I plan to fly but I dont know how much of my stuff I can take 🙁

Hey! That's awesome...so I am not the only San Franciscan heading to Midwestern University. I am not sure if chichan is still going there as well (another San Franciscan....don't know her personally).

I guess I'll make it official once I hear from the other school.

I wanted to do a cross country drive b/c I know its possible...I had a friend who drove from Davis, CA with his 2 Newfoundlands to Boston. I love travelling, so this would be cool to see other parts of America. However, I admit, I am currently working on learning how to drive (don't laugh at me!!!)...Otherwise, I'll be looking for a decent used car in Chicago...Got to get to those externships somehow.

I went to undergrad in Boston; you'll really love it there. The change of the seasons in the fall is beautiful, and you'll have so many things to do there.
Have fun!

This is my second time moving cross country. First time was from TX to Boston, now from TX to NC. This second time is a much shorter distance than it was to Boston, but this time I'm taking everything with me -- including 9 animals....how am I going to accomplish that?! 😛

My interview was orginally in feb but I had to reschedule it to march. I also have no idea how I'm going to move all my stuff across the country. 😕

Yay!!! I can't wait to start school as well. As for housing, I'm really interested in the off-campus apts, according to the website pix they're pretty nice but they're all a half-mile away from school.... not sure if I want to walk that far each day 😳 The on-campus apts would probably be a lot more convenient but they do look older 🙁 I'm going to check them all out during the welcome day in june. Are you planning to go also?

yep! i have my tickets booked for welcome day - so expensive! i'm flying into maryland that morning since i worked it out and got out of staying (and paying for a hotel) and am visiting my friend in ohio before.
the off-campus housing looked so nice but since i was so antsy of figuring out all the details, i signed up for university suites so far. they just renovated so i'll check it out also on welcome day and see.

where from california do you live?

o nice. i thought i was the only one...

i moved from cali to maryland four years ago for undergrad. if you've never been to the east coast, get some thick wool coats. i only had a windbreaker my first winter here and i thought i was gonna die.

also fyi, in my opinion, i think apts are a lot nicer in cali than bmore. its pretty ghetto here since everythings been built like 1800s or something. but, they do renovate the places.

cya both on welcome day!

Hey marylandpharm,

Do you recommend any districts around Baltimore to live? My boyfriend will be moving there in 2007 to start his residency (nuclear medicine)...he's been looking around the harbor area...He's been also tracking the crime rate as well when he looks at housing (within the last two weeks)....Or do you suggest to live outside of Baltimore?

Thanks!

well, to be honest, i never lived in the downtown area near UMB. i lived a bit up north, with, i believe, less crime (i was closer to where i went for undergrad)

in terms of where to live, the only thing i heard someone tell me is that its better to live more west of Martin Luther King street (drive/blvd/i have no idea...we refer to it as MLK) - this means living closer to inner harbor is better.

i think generally, theres more crime (and higher rent) when inside any city. just take the age-old advice of not taking midnight stroll. i heard a dental student died from being stabbed in the back after being mugged - he was walking back real late after doing whatever he was doing at school (i guess studying)

also fyi, if he does live outside of bmore MLK gets pretty jammed up in the mornings. a drive that would take 10 minutes would take about half an hour or so.

sorry if i werent much of a help. =) if anybody wants to correct me on this, feel free.

btw, just out of curiosity, is your BF the guy who posted on the UMB housing website regarding living in sails cloth? his name is adam smith on the ad.

Thanks marylandpharm for all your help! When my boyfriend was there for an interview, he was telling me how ghetto it was, especially around JH Hospital. But, he still chose to go there for his residency...No, he didn't post an ad on UMB housing...He has a whole year to look for one (unless his prelim year at Queens, NY keeps him pretty busy...)

hahahaha...JH hospital. i was a lab rat there for a real long time. its REALLY bad there. the moment you take a step outside of the hospital, you get mugged on site. the one cool thing about the place is that they sell $1 6-inch subs. they're great. to this day, i wonder what the heck were in those subs.

...the hospitals good too. =)

yeah baltimore housing is givin me mucho stress

I live right at the border of la and oc. How are you planning to move all your stuff to maryland? I was thinking about loading up a truck and driving, but that's going to be one looooong road trip.

is anyone going to go with you for the drive?
since oncampus housing comes furnished, i'm hoping i'll be okay flying. if i need more things, i'm going to try to convince my friends to visit sooner than later and then ask them to bring some things along for me 🙂
during the interview, everyone suggested oncampus housing...i hope it wasn't just a selling pitch but really a good housing choice. is anyone else planning on living at the university suites?

Oops I messaged you before I read this post. Anyhow, I'm moving from the San Francisco area to Maryland too if UMB does end up being the ultimate choice, and am still trying to figure out what to do with housing. University Suites did look good though. I signed up for the other one, Pascault Housing I think it was, but I'm really not sure where to live at all.

One of the people working at Housing office told me that Pascault Housing most likely wouldn't be available to new students because they are not allowing 2 people to a room anymore so the availability will be less. I thought the University Suites are kind of pricey so I am looking at offcampus housing no more than 0.5 from campus. There are about 5 or 6 apt. buildings close by. Good luck...

Man I wish I was moving out of State for school. USC is 12 miles from my parents house. I guess I am fortunate that I can live at home and save a boat load of money, and not leave family and friends. But I kinda want to experience something new..Hmm.

Oh man. Yeah I'll definitely look at nearby apartments. Good luck to you too!

Hi I might be moving to Maryland as well. Is the crime rate really bad and something to look for. I cant afford much, so Im going with the cheapest place to live....

crimes not that bad but worse than where i grew up from in california.

just dont put yourself in vulnerable positions (ie. walking alone at night, etc) 😛

I am moving from MD to MA not so bad. but i don't like the cold!!!!!!!

I am going to omit my international moves before I graduated College, and just keep to life as a grown up:

Florida (Miami)
Connecticut
California (SF)
Back to Florida where I started...

Miss Cali very very much..Only miss friends in Ct and the apples in the fall.

are you all using the UMB housing website, or is there another website i should check out?

I don't see Cali on the list.

Most Dangerous Cities:
1. Camden, N.J.
2. Detroit
3. St. Louis
4. Flint, Mich.
5. Richmond, Va.
6. Baltimore
7. Atlanta
8. New Orleans
9. Gary, Ind.
10. Birmingham, Ala.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/10138623

hahahahaha...

wow...6th on the list. how do they rate these?

but, i DID say crime in baltimore is "worse THAN...cali" not "worse in...cali" =)

Safest Cities:
1. Newton, Mass.
2. Clarkstown, N.Y.
3. Amherst, N.Y.
4. Mission Viejo, Calif.
5. Brick Township, N.J.
6. Troy, Mich.
7. Thousand Oaks, Calif.
8. Round Rock, Texas
9. Lake Forest, Calif.
10. Cary, N.C.

god i cant wait until i move back...

I am not a pharmacy major.

But I have moved many times.

I am from West Palm Beach, FL. And I went to music school in Boston
New England Conservatory, two years, and then went back to community college in Lake Worth for one year, then to Orlando for two years to earn my undergrad degree in statsitics from UCF, and then to Raleigh, NC two years for graduate study in statistics at NC State.

This is four moves in 7 years!

Moving to different places is really fun in my opinion! I would never want to be stuck in the same place for too long!

Side Note:

Richmond in my opinion is not dangerous. I love Richmond actually and it is two and a half hours away. It home of Capital One, which interviewed at unsuccessfully, and the Edgar Allan Poe museum. It is two and a half hours from Raleigh, and I have been there on the way to Washington, D.C.

Also, Cary, NC is too "suburban" for my taste. It is next to Raleigh and is the home of SAS, the famous statsitical software package. You are guaranteed to get lost there since there are so many regulations and many streets are unmarked. It is an overrated place in my opinion.

How do they get this list?

Well, if it's like most of the city lists, it's based on certain types of recorded crimes per capita within the city limits. So, it can be very deceptive. For example, I live in the Atlanta metro area, but I don't live anywhere near the city limits of Atlanta, nor do I go into the city limits except on very rare occasions. I live in an area that has statistically much less crime than the city of Atlanta. That's probably how Cary is on the best list - it's a separate municipality from Raleigh, it doesn't count the crimes in Raleigh.
