Do any of the regulars here know anything about MS fellowships? I know that UW has one and unlike most in the field, I have zero interest in outpatient/pain aspect of PMR. Are there many jobs available for physiatrists who complete a fellowship in MS? Thanks for any info.

Are you talking about Multiple Sclerosis?

There is a Neuro-muscular fellowship track starting up soon - There was a session on it at the AAP conference this year. I'll have to see if I can dig up my handout to get you more info... Anyone remember who was at the AAP conference??

I think the Neuromuscular lectures were put on by Michael Andary/Lisa Krivickas et al.

I didn't know the NMD fellowships covered MS. I had assumed they were focused on NMD with specific electrodiagnostic characteristics.

Am not sure if it covers MS but since there is no specific fellowship per se for JUST MS - I thought the NMD fellowship may cover it as one of the "neuro" diagnoses - but you're right, I think it's mostly NMDs like ALS, muscular dystrophy, etc.

I think most "general" rehab docs deal with MS - our PD does A LOT of MS and he's a "general" rehab doc.

Rocket1, did you hear about someone who had done a MS fellowship?

Rocket is correct, there is a MS Fellowship through the VA in either Seattle or Portland. Here is some info from the UW website.

Sorry, I don't have any firsthand info, but I think Dr. Haselkorn would be a good person to contact. Note the email address and website at the bottom of the page.

from the UW PM&R website:
Fellowship Programs:
Multiple Sclerosis
Multiple Sclerosis and Neuroimmunology Fellowship
VA Puget Sound Health Care System
The Veteran's Administration Pugest Sound Health Care System of Seattle, in partnership with the Veteran's Administration Medical Center in Portland OR, is now offering a one- to three-year multiple sclerosis and neuroimmunology fellowship. The fellowship commences July 2006.

Fellows receive intensive training in diagnosis and management, disease modifying therapies, clinical trials, development of novel therapies and use of Telehealth. The program offers research opportunities, training in cellular and molecular immunology, use of quantitative MRI, interaction with nationally recognized MS experts, and one-on-one didactic training.

This position includes a competitive salary, benefits, and choice of Seattle or Portland locations, a strong emphasis on career development including advanced research methods and analysis, and grant writing skills.

I dont know anybody personally who has done a MS fellowship. I know a faculty member at UTSW who did the fellowship and in the job postings I recently viewed online, University of Miami was looking for a physiatrist who had done a fellowship in MS to join the faculty.

I know that other schools have fellowships for MS, but not through the PMR department. The only one I have seen is through UW. I guess anybody is eligible to apply, but I was trying to gauge how many people actually do this fellowship and how useful it is.

I'm sorry - I just searched on the AAPMR website - there seems to be "two" fellowships.

Program Type 3:

I have to apologize I don't know much about the MS fellowship

Try Brian Apatoff, Associate Professor of Neurology who runs a huge MS Center at Cornell as well as contact the Sereno MS Fellowship(which if I recall correctly paid very nicely for a fellowship $65K when I checked 2-3 yrs ago)

I agree that probably the best approach for someone interested in multiple sclerosis would be to focus on a well-rounded residency training, and then if you desired additional training, to sit for a neuromuscular fellowship, which will have ACGME accreditation.

I know of a few physiatrists who focus exclusively on MS (Denise Campagnolo in Arizona is one), but they usually also have a research focus.

If your primary clinical interest is MS, you probably will need something else to fund your position, either research or a more broad based clinical practice. Both of those goals could be met with one of the new neuromuscular fellowships.
