2024-2025 RECRUITMENT OPEN HOUSE INFORMATIONAL SESSIONS

  • Do you want to help people with spine and joint problems, and you wonder what you can offer beyond shots and pills?
  • Would you like to learn health policy one-on-one from leaders of a top academic institution to understand why things are as they are and how they could be better?
  • Do you want to be an excellent physiatrist and maybe even change healthcare?
We proudly present the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Fellowship in Value-Based Spine and Musculoskeletal Medicine.

In the pursuit of "pain generators" and neurochemical pathways, the greater capacity of rehabilitation is often lost. The best available data indicate that chronic spine and musculoskeletal pain are largely about biomechanics (how people do and don't move), beliefs and behaviors (loss of control, loss of identity, pacing, fear, frustration, sadness, desperation). The core of optimal management is diagnosis, education, and empowerment, with goals of preventing complications and restoring quality of life. Like spinal cord injury, brain injury, and amputation, chronic spine and musculoskeletal pain is a problems of rehabilitation.

To practice spine and musculoskeletal medicine comprehensively, one needs a better kind of training. UPMC, an integrated delivery and financing system that provides clinical care and health insurance, is uniquely suited to cultivate new solutions. The UPMC Value-Based Spine and Musculoskeletal Medicine was designed to train the next generation of physiatrist leaders. The fellowship involves clinical training in the advanced non-operative management of complex spine and musculoskeletal conditions; collaboration with a highly motivated, interdisciplinary, physiatry-led team that includes subspecialty-trained physical therapists, a pain psychologist, a dietician, a health coach, and dedicated nurse coordinators; flexible rotations with radiology, spine surgery, neurology, rheumatology, anesthesiology, & other relevant specialties; and a one-of-a-kind health policy curriculum designed and taught by physician leaders at the UPMC Health Plan.

If you think that this sounds like a unique and exciting opportunity, you are correct.
