Hey there!

Well, it looks like baby is due March 12th, right in the middle of my family practice rotation. Anyone gone through this? Do you think my attendings will look less favorably upon me? Funny thing is, I want to do family practice... not sure what kind of eval I might receive by popping out a kid midway. 😳 Anyone know how much time I could take off without getting a year behind? I'll check with the school in a month or two, but any advice or personal experiences are appreciated.

Thanks,
Andrea

Hi Andrea,

Congratulations!

I am in an Allopathic program and found myself in a very similar situation. I actually did my Ob/gyn rotation while in my third trimester -- and although I don't highly recommend it, I made it through! My school is pretty liberal with leaves of absence -- I started my leave at my 36th week of pregnancy, planning to go back in 3 months. However, I came back and asked for more time and they gave me no problem! I would start by talking to the most student friendly member of your administration - but I am sure that they will accomodate you!

Carol Ann, thanks for the reply! Did the 3 months off put you a year behind? Or do they let you graduate with your class but get your diploma later? I would really like to graduate on time, but maybe I'll change my tune when I get close to the date.

andrea - had I only taken 3 months off, I could have scrambled and managed to graduate on time, but it would've made my fourth year a little more stressful. In the end I decided to take 10 months off of school since I was going to graduate a year late anyway...I needed that time off though - my mom was a stay at home mom and when my daughter was very small I just couldn't imagine sending her to daycare. In retrospect, she would've been fine, I think I just was not ready to be away from her!b

I just want to say Congrats! I'm applying this year, so I don't have any advice for you. It sounds like there are a lot of people who do have kids while in school. Start searching now for childcare because often there is a 6 month wait. Good Luck!
