anybody know details about subspecializing in musculoskeletal and working with a rehab/ortho/pain practice? Is there a specific fellowship in MS radiology? Also, are there any interventional procedures that these docs do, or are they mostly just reading films? (In other words, is there any way to attain some patient contact within this field?) Thanks much-

Theres a fellowship in musculoskeletal radiology -- the "hottest" one right now, i suspect its the lifestyle 😉.

They do co-ordinate with orthopedic surgeons and occasionally do procedures like vertebroplasties etc. It seems like in radiology subspecialties, you can really play with what you are an "Expert" in, like this rad guy at my institution who is a specialist on musculoskeletal intervention and sports medicine.

MSK is not nearly as popular as it was two years ago. Right now, fears loom over the loss of MSK MRI due to orthopods buying their own magnets and self-refer.

MSK MRI is really what the specialty is about, it is why people go into it. Plus, the chances of getting sued are really quite low.

Reality is that in the PP world, almost all rads can read MSK as well as the fellowship trained MSK guy. In fact, most body imagers are the ones reading MSK out in the real world. MSK can be learned quite well without a fellowship. Most things can, but some areas really need fellowship training, such as Neuro, IR and NeuroIR. The other areas are pretty equal out in the real world when all is said and done.

Of course, in academia it is totally different. But, who gives a **** about the ivory tower anyway.
