MS1 Considering PM&R... Advice?

I am a first year who wants to know more about PM&R so basically anything anyone could tell me about it would be helpful. What activities are helpful as a med student? Is research really important to be competitive?

What is the residency like itself? The transition year? And what are some of your plans for your career after residency?

Don't take this the wrong way...but the FAQ threads at the top have a ton of information and will get you more aquainted w/ PM&R and answer many questions about the field. I found them to be extremely helpful last year when I was in your position.

It's great that you found PM&R so early in your career. I would defintiely read the FAQs and stickies on this site. One thing I would encourage you to look into is the externship at RIC. It is for med students btwn their 1st and 2nd year and they provide a stipend and you spend your days shadowing physiatrists, attending lectures, and doing research projects. They actually give out an award for the best research so you can pad your CV even more!

Hey there. I'm also a first year considering PM&R. Does your school have a PM&R department? If so you got it made...I would just grab my white coat and walk onto the floor and talk to some docs if they have a spare moment.

If not...see if you can email/call people to see if you can shadow them in your area. I was able to get a hold of some physiatrists in my area who have been VERY helpful...they told me a great deal about the field very candidly. Their personalities and willingness to take me in have attracted me even more...there's def a lack of ego that I really appreciate in the field.

You'll definitely learn a ton if you spend some time going through the info on this forum. The docs and students on this forum are very helpful. PM me if you want any more ideas or have questions of how to get involved.

i would argue you should keep an open mind for most things as an ms1. you have some time to think about things and many people change their mind between ms1 and ms3.
