1- if you do a search, you'll find plenty of threads about this...

2- you're not a medical student yet😉

:luck:

looking back i wish i had a snuggie

I already have one, including the press and open book light...

A healthy dose of self-confidence

....also, a laptop

Quite frankly I wish I woulda bought a Slap Chop.

You might want a second snuggie to cover your backside when studying in the library.

Starting residency next week in Boston - there were 3 books that I found essential before and during med school (others may have different opinions so chime in), 1. First Aid (Step 1), can be bought later 2. Anatomy atlas (buy it now) 3. MedMatch (Medical School and Residency Match), buy and read before you start.

+1 for First Aid and Anatomy atlas (I used netters but there is another good option that others used as well that I forgot atm.. will update when i remember). I'm not sure if Medmatch is really good as I didn't use it. I just got all my information from surfing these forums for long periods of time haha. I would also get BRS phys and Costanzo phys for whenever you start physiology.

A decent laptop and a fridge well-stocked with food and beer.

I was an overzealous pre-med before arriving at med school and ended up buying all of the recommended texts as well as all of the equipment. In retrospect, little if any of this was necessary.

Look in to whether your school has a program that you can get in touch with a current first or second year. They generally have a pretty good grasp on what materials are required and what are not.

I can say with conviction that I never used my PanOptic ophthalmoscope in a clinical setting during medical school.
The microscope slides were entirely unnecessary, our microscopy labs (microbiology and pathology) were all done on computer.
Tuning fork? Nope
Wartenberg wheel? I use it more to demonstrate what it's used for than an actually clinical tool.
Snelling eye chart? There is a copy in most of the handbooks we carry around as well as on the internet readily.

who wrote first aid?

i am in the same boat as you OP, but here is my advice.

an emergency fund of somewhere around 3-5k in my opinion so that if your car (if applicable) or laptop crap out on you, you don't have to borrow money at 6% to buy a new one. it will save you thousands over the repayment lifetime.

What is the 3rd resource?

I can't find a link online

Since initially posting this thread, the OP has already graduated medical school and is 2 years into residency. I'm sure that he still appreciates the sentiments of advice though.

Aside from FA and Netters, you don't really need anything. In terms of software, I strongly recommend using OneNote as a way to keep all your stuff organized.

When should one buy FA? I've heard different things about different years' versions, etc. Not sure if my school will have a discount on it(idk if that exists or not), etc
