From reading the Rad-Onc forum, it seems that most PD or Residency heads only pay attention to your research if it is specialized in Rad-Onc. I was wondering how important research is for looking to match into a Neurology residency and is it THAT much more helpful if the research based in the neuro field. Just looking to kind of make a good guideline for med school as to get what done and how to attack getting a competitive residency when I actually feel like I am sure I know what I want to do. Any advice would be great. Thanks.

Research in neuro would be best, but only if it's something you like and is a quality opportunity. Neuro has quite a bit of latitude in research, everything from NSGY to Neurorads or Neuropath and even some Neuropsych, so it's not quite as focused as rad onc. Having said that, any research is better than none, and you are in a good position, given that you are going to have available at least one summer to do research, hopefully (M1 to M2 summer). Further, neuro is in no way as competitive as rad onc. There are many more spots and there are many high quality programs. So don't worry, focus on doing your best to lay down a good foundation for your clinical years by studying well as an M1 and M2, and enjoy.
