Hey all,

Current MS1 student here.
I recently started working through Bros deck (on anki), mostly working through the Biochem and hoping to work myself up to the current organ system that my school is on. It takes me between 60 to 90 minutes per day. To be honest, it (obviously) isn't the funnest thing in the work but I am enjoying it and (in my opinion) I think the deck is set up really well. I feel like I am retaining most of what I am learning. I use FA 2016 to cross reference things that I didn't learn in my classes (like inheritance patterns for Biochem, for example).

However, I was speaking with some upperclassmen mentors today and many of them mentioned that it is a complete waste of time because I will most likely forget everything I have learned and that I should be, instead, spending more time in my current course load and not "waste my time" with extra stuff for Boards now. One of them even mentioned that studying Bros deck now can somehow "interfere" with actually studying for Boards during MS2.

What do you all think? Should I quite? I have a horrible memory and feel like I cram for most of my exams so I need something to constantly remind myself of some of the stuff I learned in my past courses.

Just FYI, if it makes a difference, I usually score in the upper 20-25% of my class, so I guess there is room I can improve in my classes instead of spending time with Bros deck.

Titrate your anki to an hour a day (+/- 300 cards/day). Start lengthening your max interval up to 3-4 months in short steps and cap your daily reviews. The goal is to maintain ~90% correct on mature cards.

I've received similar advice from upperclassmen before that was along the lines of "you will forget everything so don't bother". Don't listen to anyone that hasn't used anki extensively-- the long term retention you can gain from an hour a day gives you such an advantage in the long run. It becomes more apparent during M2 and really helps you excel in M3.

Cool. That's very reassuring. Thank you.
Like I said before, my school is very "cram heavy" because we are tested every week and very few exams are actually cumulative so I have a tendency of forgetting a big portion of what I learn.
I started with Firecracker (that's what our Dean's office recommended) but I couldn't stand it so switched to Bros Deck on Anki and love it.

Nice, this is super helpful

If you haven't done any path idk how you could really even use it. Suppose you could do like the biochem and micro portions of it though.

Bro's in MS1 works best if your school has a systems based curriculum. For example, after you complete your MSK block then Bro's deck would be great to keep the information fresh as you move forward to other systems. Without any path it would be more work than it's worth to make it fit your needs.

Recommend doing it along with your coursework. You will be happy when boards roll around.
