Just finished 2nd year and have yet to take step 1. I am really interested in the field of PMR, but really just want to take time off as I feel I am too exhausted from this long path and just need a break. I don't want to just go through the motions during rotations and jeopardize my learning, and also want to fully focus on step 1 before I move on.

As applying to a PMR residency, will taking a year off affect my chances in matching? I am willing to go into any PMR residency, it doesn't have to be a top-notch one, just a DO residency in PMR. Is this competitive?

I plan on doing some research in my time off also, not just sit at home. Hoping to land a research opportunity in PMR to really make my resume well..

In the first two years, I failed one class. I do not know how this will count against me in PMR, please let me know as much as you can. thank you!

Not necessarily.
you should always shoot for the best program that best suits your goals and future career.
Definitely, shows interest in field and commitment to growth rather than just taking a vacation from burn out. Let's be realistic, it will only get tougher.
That will be an issue irrespective of whatever field you choose but won't prevent you from achieving your goals. But you will have to work harder and show you have learned and grown from it.
