When does/did the newest edition of the MSAR come out? I am kind of interested in seeing what the new MCAT and such has done to application to the schools, and change in individual school statistics.

I have the 2008-2009 edition, I ordered it a couple weeks ago, I think this is the newest one till next year maybe? not sure though.

The new edition usually doesn't come out until March, but if you wanted to pick up the current edition that wouldn't be problematic because the information changes very little from year to year. I know because I have 3 editions of the MSAR and the only changes are very minute.

Right, I do have the current edition, and luckily I got accepted this year, so I am not using it for this coming cycle. I really just want to see a few schools over the last few years and the current for entertainment purposes (and so I can advise a friend).

I hate my curiousity, AAMC is always convincing me to spend money on something they produce.

I bought the one before the 2009-2010 edition even though I am not applying until next year....I guess I was just anxious.

Anyone know if they really even change that much from edition to edition, especially if its only 1 year behind (in my case)??? I dont really want to spend more money on something that is only slightly, if at all, "updated"

Does the MSAR compile the median gpa and mcat for accepted students every year for all schools? I thought I read somewhere that even in the 2008-2009 edition, they are using median stats of acceptances from as long ago as 2006 for some schools.

Ya can anyone with the new edition let us know what year the statistics in it are from? Also I have the 2007-2008 edition and it doesn't have the acceptance rates for schools. Only how many people applied and how many matriculated. Does the new one have anything different?

This MSAR thing is ******ed. $25??? That information should be made available by the AAMC for free over the internet. It doesn't cost much to have an extra page on your website containing about 5 MB of information and this is information that they collect anyway. I think it is shameful that they insist on publishing it in print so they can make some extra bucks off of the already expensive process of applying to medical school.

I never used the MSAR when I was applying and I don't think that you need to. You usually get information via word of mouth from your school or online resources that is close to what you would get from the MSAR but just not so neatly packaged. $25!! I can do a lot with $25.

That information should cost $0. It should be provided for free. Their costs related to gathering that information are almost entirely related to the production of the book. And really, what information do they provide you with that you can't get elsewhere? Google your brains out.

i think the book can be very helpful bc i have friends who i know bought it. u can honestly save urself the 25 dollors though if it really matters to u. i went to a library one afternoon, wrote down a list of schools to look into from looking at the US news list. after that i went home and did everything off the schools' websites--and found the process pretty easy that way. ive never actually seen an MSAR--all the info u need on how to apply to various schools is on their websites, and by bookmarking them u can stay on top of stuff better even--some will have their secondaries available before ur AAMCAS is even out, for example.

I totally agree - don't get me wrong. I'm just saying that's not how it is, and I find $25 to be a reasonable price to pay. I mean, look at the AACOMAS site. All the schools' information is plainly listed there in an easily-downloadable PDF file. Having the same for the AMCAS schools would be fantastic, but that's not gonna happen since they know they can get 20000 premeds to send then $25 a pop.

Most of the information that would be of value to you or anyone else applying that has internet access is available with a google search. There are only a few exceptions and those are easy surpassed by contacting the schools. So not only should it be free, but one should "google their brains out" before paying $25. 🙂

You can probably expect as much change from 1 edition to the next as you can from 1 application year to the next.

Has anyone ordered the 2009-10 version from the AAMC site? Do you know how long it takes to ship? (I'm asking because Amazon's is only in stock in July ... so I wasn't even sure if it was out yet.)

Its out, I received mine directly from AAMC within 7-10 days. I think that it will probably ship faster than that now because I ordered it right when it came out so I think they were still in the process of getting it in stock.
