This is a really interesting question, i think. here's the scenario. every year a school that has, let's say, 100 seats, will end up accepting like 200 or so students. obviously this works because some end up not going there, thus they don't overfill the class even though they accept that many.

OK. so when you hear that a school is "full" i usually take that to mean that they've accepted at least as many as the class will hold. in this case, at least 100 students. but obviously they have to accept more people or their class won't be full in august. so do they get ALL of these extra people off the waitlist?

i ask because let's say someone goes to interview at a school after it's accepted 100 students. will that person be put on the waitlist automotically, or can they just be accepted right away? in other words, do schools end up with the 200 accepted students that appears on the MSAR by accepting 100 from the waitlist? is it possible they would initially accept 150 for the 100 person class (before the waitlist) and then as spots are dumped, they fill in the other 50 acceptances that appear on the MSAR from the wailist?

it's a little complicated, and i want people to completely understand the specificity of this question before they post. but i may not have explained it very clearly. anyway, what do you think?

the reason i ask is because i'm interviewing at a school which might have already accepted enough to fill it's class, and i want to know if i'm interviewing AT BEST for the waitlist..or is it possible that i'll be accepted right away.

It varies from school to school I think. Some schools only accept the fixed amount of their entering class, and then grant additional acceptances as people who've been accepted withdraw. Other schools have a good idea regarding what their yield is, and go ahead and offer more acceptances than seats available. For example, if a school has 100 spots, and a historical yield of 50%, then it's probably not too uncommon for them to offer 150 outright acceptances, and then take 50 people off the waitlist in the summer. Understand what I'm saying Caveman? Oh, and if you're interviewing at USF let me know, and I'll be there to interview with you. Ya know, just show up and pretend that the office made a mistake or something.

hi papa smurf. actually i'm interviewing at miami. i got the invite yesterday and i wanna do the interview asap because i know they're on a rolling admissions. i'm sure they've already accepted as many as the class holds, so i'm just hoping they accept me right away, rather than put me on the waitlist. wanna go with me?

Hmm... what makes you think Miami's class is full? I don't think they're quite full yet, my friend says they've only had 2 adcom meetings. Apparently they're waitlisting/deferring a lot more people this year as opposed to last year. Anyway, I'd love to go down there. Jackson Memorial ROCKS!!! I think UM is ridiculously underrated considering the clinical experience you'll get there. Hope your interview goes well! Let us know how it turns out, and if their class is full or not.

Caveman,
One of my very close freinds is a student at Miami (MS1) and I spoke to him just last week and he said that Miami is not even close to filling their class. He told me that the number of acceptances thus far are only low double digits. Also, just a bit of info; Miami now accepts way more out of state students then they had during previous years (my freind was an out of state student). Whatever you do go in there w/ a positive attitude!! If you got an interview, you have a good shot!!

There's still hope for some of us to stay in Florida!

Now, I don't know how many people they interviewed; I just know what my freind told me w/respect to acceptances.
Good luck guys! There is still hope! 😀

Thank you Thank you Thank you for this wonderful information!!!! <img src="http://www.minorannoyance.net/~spin/Smilies/contrib/tweetz/wiggle.gif" alt="" />

Too bad I'm going to Miami all this week to party and not to interview 🙁 Maybe they'll call me up and invite me while I'm there! Gotta go pack! 😀

cool. i looked at the acceptance/interview numbers at usnews.com and it's about 75% for miami. it's good to hear that they're so far behind. but i remember some friends of mine interviewing in November...so how could they be so backed up? well, i'm gonna just hope it's true.

by the way, why are they waitlisting so many people?

Maybe they are extra backed up because they do everything with snail mail...and you have to mail back a postcard to get a secondary, which took forever....but then again, they had a deadline for their secondary, so they should be up to date. Maybe they're waitlisting people to see if files they haven't reviewed are better, and don't want to miss out on anything.

You hear me, Miami? Read my file! <img src="http://www.minorannoyance.net/~spin/Smilies/contrib/tweetz/wiggle.gif" alt="" />

Caveman, you might've read that thread about USC (i think) accepting more than it should've, because less people turned them down than they had expected. They didn't take back any acceptances though, instead they made the following years class smaller. So schools will probably be more cautious now to NOT let this happen.
