  1. Psychology Student
Hey Everyone
I’ve been looking into applying for a master’s in counseling this fall and had a quick question. One program I’m interested in offers a MSE degree in counseling housed in the education department. It provides the student to become licensed as an LPC after enough hours of course.
My questions I guess are: what are the benefits and limitations of receiving an MSE degree compared to an MS or MA in counseling? I would like to become licensed as an LPC and work for a little bit; however, I am also considering continuing my education to a counseling psychology PhD program. Would this degree be beneficial for a counseling psychology PhD program?
Thanks for your responses in advance

Well I can't answer your first question (about MA/MS vs. MSEd) but I think the degree could be beneficial for Counseling Psych PhD programs. The Graduate School of Education at my school houses both an MsEd in Mental Health Counseling and Counseling Psychology PhD program (which I am in). And many people in my program have masters in counseling - some MAs, some MsEd and others MFTs so I'm not sure if an MSE will be more beneficial than the other masters level degrees.

As long as the program is accredited (which inherently thus already has the right courses and clinical training), then it doesn't matter if it is an MA, MS, MEd or MSE (which I've never actually heard of). The only time I have ever seen ANYTHING regarding whether or not a degree was from the school of ed or not was in regards to a re-specialization in clinical psych for those already holding psych PhDs.

So from your responses it sounds as if this program will be acceptable for counseling psychology PhD programs. Yes, the program is accredited by CACREP, and faculty and staff are in fact transitioning the program from 48-credits to 60-credits.

I'm providing the link to their website so you have a better understanding of the program. Thanks again!
