Hey everyone,
I just wanted to bring this up...next fall I am taking Organic Chem Lab, which meets twice a week at my school, 4 hours each. I'm applying to 13-14 schools - I'm just wondering how everyone has managed to juggle between interviews and a lab course. I was thinking of taking orgo lab in the spring, but there are interviews then as well. And I assume that not much goes in for winter break (Dec 20 - Jan 20). Or am I wrong? I know that different schools do it differently, but I'm sure that there is an overall trend. Of course I'm assuming I'll get invited.

can you take it over the summer? that might be the best option.

My experience was that the majority of MSTP interviews are on Friday or Thursday and Friday. If you avoid those two days in scheduling your lab, you should be okay. You might still have to miss a few labs, but could probably attend a different section on a week-by-week basis.

GlcNac's right. Most of my interviews stretched over the weekend (eg - arrive Thursday, interview Friday, see town/depart Saturday). The important thing is to keep track of everything that's going on. Professors are a lot more accomodating when they have 2 or 3 weeks notice than when you tell them the day before you leave. That, most of them understand the interview process, especially with a pre-med course like orgo. Good luck to ya! 🙂

Indeed, most interviews are Fri or Thurs/Fri, or are Mon or Mon/Tues. I think you'll probably be okay, particularly if you can be all diligent and work extra hard on days when you'll be around.

If you submit the secondary applications early enough (mid-october?), you can probably do most, if not all, of your interviewing during the fall semester. So maybe it would be better to take the class in the spring if that's still possible.
