Books are paid for by your stipend and constitute a deduction from your taxes. Class material (printed syllabi) should be provided through your tuition, but it depends on the school. Materials such as physical exam equipment, laptops, and so on are typically funded through your stipend and may or may not be deducted from your taxable income (only if they are required by all students).

Thanks a lot. That's useful information. Yeah, I didn't think about it, but these educational expenses warrant a tax write off. Sweet 😀... Which is a topic for another day. I recall reading a while back that MSTP students have to file quarterly because programs don't withhold.
