This might be kind of a random question, but I'm interviewing there next week, and I was a volunteer there in undergrad. Dr Hodge wrote my LOR to get into Med School, and I was just curious if he still works there. I look forward to my interview next week, and really dig the idea of doing my residency there.

He's still here.
I always feel like I learn alot when I work a shift with him.

Cool. I always liked him a lot. I'll see you guys for interview next week!

The interview season is picking up....
Anyone with any questions?

How quickly is your program sending out interview invites? Because judging by the interview threads, Lansing has noone signed up, and the only person I've heard of getting an interview is daveyjwin above.

I'll have to check with the people actually responsible for that portion of the process.
I do know that the number of candidates that we are seeing each week is still ramping up.
IIRC the MD applicants are typically interviewed a little later in our interview cycle (secondary to the MD match occurring after the DO match) - but I can also check on that for you.

We will be interviewing for at least another couple months. Not sure why more of our applicants aren't on here. IIRC one of our interview days has up to 10 applicants.

Why is the DO residency length 4 years where as MD is 3 years? Do MD students learn the material that much fast here

But seriously I'm just wondering why there is a difference b/w the two, is this the case at most residencies for DO's (going into EM that is)?

AOA EM residencies are a min. of 4 years while ACGME EM programs can be either 3 or 4.

I guess if a DO matches into the program via the allopathic match he could do just 3. Do I have this right?

I'm not an osteopath but it's more complicated than that. I know in michigan a DO applying via the allopathic match to a 3 year program has to do a one year internship before starting. IIRC Lansing has this kind of built into their program, the DOs have a one year internship at lansing, then start as EM-1s, PGY2s the next year, but the MDs start as PGY1 EM1s.

I don't know all of the mechanics, but certain states (I believe there are only 5) require DOs to do an additional intern year prior to residency. It's politics, not competency. Check the DO-student forum for more info. Also, some EM residencies are 4 years anyways, so you wouldn't necessarily be in residency another year.

Well there are exceptions to the internship rule for DO's. In 5 states (pennsylvania, michigan, florida, west virginia, and I forget the other state at the moment) require that prior to begining a residency that a DO complete a rotating intership. Almost all DO programs integrate this into their programs as it is. However if a person wants to match directly into an allopathic program and either wants to be licensed in the above states or match at a program in the above states, they can apply for what is known as an article 32. This is where they apply to an osteo board and get permission to have their residency count towards the required rotations during such an internship. It is very easy to apply for this exemption, 99% of everyone who applies is granted one. I have heard of some programs, including 1 particular EM program in MI, who state they wont allow a DO to apply for an exemption and whats them to go through a internship the traditional way first. I personally think requiring that is ridiculous. I can't recall if it was beaumont or one of the MSU programs.

Resolution 42.

I stand corrected. Thank you tkim. Hey how bout some props for an MD even knowing as much as I did?

that's pretty much the way that it works.

However, the DO PGY1s do spend a significant portion of their year in the ED.
There aren't so many rotations that they have to do that the MDs don't that it fills up an entire year - so the rest of that time (spread over PGY1 and PGY2) is spent in the ED.

The core faculty are placing the finishing touches on our DO rank list for this year (after a bit of resident input last week)...

Hopefully the DO match treats us well this year (as it has for the past few years)

Is it too late to have you put in a good word for me? Sparrow is definitely my first choice, by far, since I'm from the area and volunteered in the hospital.

<Fingers Crossed>

AFAIK the DO rank list is in (after some constructive feedback from the residents regarding the planned DO rank list) and the faculty are working on the MD rank list (draft)...
Am looking forward to seeing what they have come up with...
will see how much they listen to the residents suggestions on this list...

Very excited about this program and nervous about match day. Hope it all turns out well. I quick question I recall you take 10 residents a year does that include the 4 DO's from the DO program? So do you only take 6 residents a year for the 3 year program?

Thinking Green

Congratulations and welcome to our new DOs. The match list has been released amongst the program - so don't be too surprised to get e-mails welcoming you from the current residents.

And to answer the last question...
In general terms the graduating class size is approx 10 residents per year. The DOs match for the class of current + 4 years (currently class of 2014), the MDs match for the class of current + 3 years (currently class of 2013).

Does that clear things up?

Ok so since you have 4 pgy-1's in the DO track program last year you will be looking for 6 in the march match. Thats what I thought but was just double checking.
Thanks

Any body that interviewed with us care to give any feedback?

With your suggestions we'll be working to make next year's recruitment/interview process even better.

For the DOs that match into an dually accredited program, if they have only taken the comlex, can they still obtain ABEM board certification upon successful completion from such a program?

So, I looked at the match list, and it says Sparrow only got 5/9 spots filled. Did it not fill, or are those other spots the ones taken in the DO Match? If it actually didn't fill, then I'm kinda peeved, because I ranked them #1 and didn't match. Otherwise, I'll shutup and be happy with my match.

They had 4 scramble spots. I think its a very good program going in the right direction, however there are some lingering impressions that it leaves something to be desired academically. (Rumors tend to lag a few years behind the reality) I think the new administration has things on the right track...the PD seems like a great guy.

Hey don't feel bad. I worked for Lansing Fire for 8 years and in Sparrows ER for 5 years and no interview even.

Sounds like the DO Match filled then, and the MD match didn't? Maybe they should expand the number of DOs they take (then I coulda ended up there), instead of them having to take a bunch of MDs in the scramble who didn't necessarily want to go there. I'm still mildly bitter.

I'm sorry you didn't match at Sparrow. But you may have been #4 and the other 3 also ranked Sparrow #1. If you're even in the top 15 of a program's rank list you're most likely one of the top people they want in the program. The match is weird. I'm from New York, and I ranked as #1 the place where I did my 3rd and 4th year rotations and where I had worked as a volunteer for 6 years before deciding to go to med school. They ranked me in the top 15, which they were absolutely certain I would get matched. Unfortunately there were 10 of that 15 that ranked them #1 also, a strange occurrance, as they usually got people as far down as 50th on their list. Don't take it as a dis, the program is very, very competitive for DO's especially.

As far as the scramble spots go there is a method to the madness. The leadership often feels that they'd prefer to submit a short list for the match because they feel they're better off trying to get only those that are highly qualified, and if they don't fill it's better getting the best people out of the scramble. There are many, many candidates that are highly qualified and desirable that over reach for programs they simply aren't a good fit with and end up unmatched. Sparrow has gotten very good residents in the past few years in the scramble, several of which became chief residents. While that may not look good on the internet gossip circuit it works out well in the reality of residency.

Ignore this post.

Bravotwozero:

Many of the DOs in our program have only taken the comlex, and this has no effect on what qualifying exam you are eligible for. Over the past few years, all of our graduating DOs have sat for the ABEM qualifying exam. It is definitely a big plus being able to graduate with allopathic credentials if you want to practice in areas that are more DO-unfriendly.

And the application cycle begins again...
And we remain available to answer any questions about our program... why listen to thoughts about a program on the rumor mill when you can get them from residents that are currently in a program?

I will be applying to your program. Looking forward to it!
