Hello other MSUCOMers or anyone who really know anythings,

I have been accepted by MSUCOM for class 2020 ( I love that number) for east lansing campus. As I understand, I will spend my first 2 years in that campus. My questions, however, are:

1. How is the set up of 3rd year at MSUCOM? Do I have to move around alot? I would greatly (really greatly) prefer not to do that! Is it possible to stay only in one place for the whole 4 years except a couple of auditory rotation? If it is possible, how easy is it to get such sites?

You see, I don't have car...

2. Do you need car to get around in east lansing? Can I just close to Campus and be done with it?

3. How are the rotation sites at MSUCOM?

Thanks in advance

Hi I am wrapping up my 2nd year at MSUCOM so I think I can help you out.

Congratulation on being accepted!
Firstly, I wouldn't worry about any of that right now as you have sooo much to get out of the way before thinking about rotations. However, to answer your question yes you can do your rotations in EL (at Sparrow or McLaren Greater Lansing) so you can still CTA it. MSUCOM lets you pick your base hospital (kind of, you'll see 😉) and all the base hospitals are very nice.

Again please don't worry about stuff like this right now, enjoy NOT being in med school while you still can 🙂

Thank you for your reply! If you don't mind me asking, which Campus are you in right now? I will be in east lansing, MI. Are you looking to move for your third year? As well, how was your first and second year? Now that I am accepted to med school, I am very nervous about it. I am trying here to write a putative plan of how I will conquer med school and plans always calm my nerve down. Finally, are those two hospital you mentioned (sparrow or mclaren) easy to to gain rotation at?
I am rather nervous since it is the first time ever that I will live away from my home :barf:.

P.S: BTW, how is east lansing? Life and everything.

Hey buddy, congrats on your acceptance! Are you asking these questions because you are debating whether or not to go to MSUCOM? Just wondering! I am a third year at COM right now, here are some answers to your questions:

1. How is the set up of 3rd year at MSUCOM? Do I have to move around alot? I would greatly (really greatly) prefer not to do that! Is it possible to stay only in one place for the whole 4 years except a couple of auditory rotation? If it is possible, how easy is it to get such sites?

During the summer semester after your first year at COM, they will give you information about all of the base hospital options that are available to your class. You can visit base hospitals as well - they will allow you to tour them and ask them further questions. At the beginning of your second year, you select your top choice for base hospital electronically. If the number of people that chooses a specific base hospital is equal to the number of slots available at that base hospital, then you are guaranteed a position at that hospital (so long as you pass your boards and the rest of second year). If the number of people that choose that base hospital exceeds the slots available, that hospital goes to "lottery." The "lottery" is held at some point during fall of second year, and basically all hospitals that had fewer slots than students wanting to go to them, get auctioned off by luck of the draw. Students that don't get their pick of base hospital then have to pick from the remaining choices.

The nice thing is that you can see how many people have picked a certain hospital. For e.g., I wanted to get out of EL for my rotations and go to the metro Detroit area ( I am from the metro DC area - EL was definitely not my style ); so, I initially picked my hospital based on both location and academics. As the time to finalize our choices came closer, I realized that my first pick had more students than slots available. So...I changed my choice to a different hospital so that I could definitely end up in the metro detroit area. I'm kind of stream of conscious here, just took my boards, so if any of this doesn't make sense, please PM me!

2. Do you need car to get around in east lansing? Can I just close to Campus and be done with it?

You definitely don't need a car in EL...but you WILL need a car once rotations start if you plan to stay in the Lansing area unless you wanna live literally IN the ghetto or pay a lot of money (like 1500) for a place out of the ghetto that isn't very nice. I know the metro detroit area doesn't have particularly nice apartments near the hospitals - and most of the walking distance hospitals are literally in the ghetto as are the hospitals. I can't speak to the other locations around the state, maybe my colleagues can chime in.

3. How are the rotation sites at MSUCOM?

So my girlfriend is a resident and has been at two different programs for her residency and fellowship. I have also visited my friends that are residents at other DO programs in smaller areas around the country. COM's base hospitals definitely have the best rotation sites in the DO world. The quality of the residents is top notch, the same as any of the mid-tier MD programs you would find, and the hospitals have a good patient population from which to learn. I think the rotation sites are the reason to go to MSU - I think they are what set it above the bar of any of the other medical schools in Michigan except for U Mich and (maybe) Wayne State.

So there you have it. PM me if you have any other qs. Are you in-state or out of state?

The easiest way to stay in one place for 4 years is to be at the Macomb or Detroit campuses. There are something like 18 hospitals in the Statewide campus system, but most of them are located around Metro Detroit.

If you want an AMAZING hospital location for 3rd year, go to Munson in Traverse City. If I could do it all over again, I would have picked that place.

Realistically, you will have to move between second and third year, but worry not, it really will work out in the end.

You will need a car, even in East Lansing. You can survive without one, but life is just easier with a car.

Are you part of our class of 2020 FB group? If not PM me. There are a lot of current students on there who would be willing to help answer your questions also.

Yep, I am. Sorry everyone for not responding immediately. I will do so tomorrow, just very busy this past week.

Why? Just curious.

First of all.....it's Traverse City. If you don't know about that place then

1. You're not from Michigan
2. Google it
3. Know that pictures taken on the beach there often have people thinking you went on a tropical vacation

Secondly, the hospital is very updated. There is a family medicine residency there that is really cool, but other than that you work exclusively with the attending for all your rotations. Great learning. Students who did there core there all love it.

It is just an all around awesome place. Wish I would have picked that as my core.

I'm from MI and I know Traverse City is beautiful. I was just wanted the information of someone ahead of me. Are any other base hospitals known to be great and well liked by students or, on the flip side, not well liked?

short answer: yes

Really, don't worry about it right now. I got caught up in all the hospital information at the end of Fall semester and I regretted it because I was constantly changing my mind about what I liked, location-wise, rotation-wise and residency-wise. The selection process for base hospitals should be on the back burner for you right now. MSUCOM will have representatives come in and talk to you about the hospitals and what they have to offer at the end of your first year. Also, you are able to tour some of the hospitals during the summer after your first year. Just focus on adjusting to school first.
