hey, just wanted to get a feel for all of you who have been accepted to MSUCOM, there doesn't seem to be a large representation from students who will be attending there, and I would like to see what type of people will be in my class if I get accepted and decide to go. please respond with your thoughts about the school, etc.

I guess I'm the type of person that got accepted here. I'm not going to MSUCOM because I'm out of state (from CA). It's too expensive, and for tons of reasons. There used to be a post here about Msucom. I actually think that's the title of the thread.

Good luck at MSUCOM!!! They seem like they have a good program. Not to mention, it looks like you're going to save a ton of $$$ since you're in-state.

Congrats on the acceptance!!!

I'll be going to MSUCOM next fall and am excited about the changes it's going to bring to my life. In my undergraduate school, all of the premed courses are full of high-strung, ultra-competitive students that have no considerations outside their current courses. The students I met at MSUCOM, while intelligent and dedicated to learning medicine, were laid-back and exceedingly friendly. From what I could tell and what I've been told, MSUCOM has a disproportionate (relative to other medical schools) amount of camraderie and the students are generally very satisfied with the program there. In fact, I've never spoken to a current student/alumni that hasn't praised the program at MSUCOM.

I've read on this forum of people who have interviewed at MSUCOM and complained about the older facilities. While old, they are kept up well. Furthermore, I truly believe that the quality of an education is not based on facilities....it's based on the quality of student-professor communication and I feel that MSUCOM has some of the best of both.

I didn't apply to MSUCOM (too expensive) but I was wondering....since it has both allopathic and osteopathic schools there do the students do the same clinical rotations as well? I would imagine so. I was just wondering.

it pisses me off they charge so much for out-of-staters. they should just say *we hate out-of-staters* on their app.

it's a great school though, but still.

MSUCOM favors in-state students because of the greater financial renumeration they receive from the state for those students .

If they said "they hated out-of-staters," that would imply that they deem residents of Michigan to be of a superior nature...subsequently admitting more of them and charging them less. I don't think that's a very logical notion.

Don't quite a few states have public universities that favor the in-state applicants for professional programs? Texas, Oklahoma, Alabama, and California come to my mind. Whatever the case, I'm glad they favored me...because there's no other place I'd rather be! (hey, that rhymed).

one of my best friends went to MSU for UG and she had nothing but nice things to say....but 45K+ for tuition is SICK. That's like 60K a year to go there outta state!

I will be attending MSU in the Fall and I am very excited. I went there for Undergrad and I am very glad to be going back.

Congratulations DCgirl, on your acceptance at state! Are you planning on attending the osteopathic or the allopathic program? Whatever the case, I think both are very strong.

I am now complete at MSUCOM as of Monday (11/17). The secretary I talked to said my file will go to adcom this Wed or next Wed. I was thinking sheesh, that's quick.

I am sitting at the edge of my seat...I'm in state and looking for an interview...please god...

For those of you accepted/interviewed, what is the turnaround time on this stage in the game?

I got an e-mail interview invite ~2-3 weeks after my application was complete and I found out I was accepted one week after my interview....they called on the phone.

The committee meets every Wednesday. So, depending when you have your interview, you may have to wait a week to hear from them. They called me around 11am on a Wednsday to let me know I was accepted.

YoungFaithful,

I am out-of-state, and still heard back from them in less than two weeks after my file was complete. I just had my interview this past Monday and am crossing my fingers that I hear something today since they seem to meet every Wednesday.

Good luck!

Laurie

I think I will call them tomorrow (thursday) just to see if i got reviewed...i'm not very patient...What do you think?

MSUCOM here I come..for my interview!

3 invites in one week!!!!

I never thought this would happen.

hey all, I just got accepted today to MSUCOM, so I am very excited as well. haven't decided for sure yet if I will attend, but I'm in state, so that is a huge reason to go there (family and money). Congratulations to you all!!

Congratulations to all of you who have been accepted at MSUCOM
and good luck to those who will be interviewing!
I just finished my first semester there and couldn't be happier with my decision to attend MSUCOM.
I am actually in the extended program, so I will have a few classes with you next year.
If you have any questions at all about MSUCOM(the questions you don't want to ask in your interview), I'd be happy to answer them .

See you in the fall🙂

I just wanted to keep this thread active so that those of us who will be attending MSUCOM can keep in touch before school starts and relay any questions we may have. congratulations to all of you, and I look forward to meeting everyone.

Anyone going to MSUCOM know where they are living yet. I am almost sure that I am going to be living in Berry Tree apts. I have a few friends there right now and they suggested that this was a good place to live.

My uncle hooked me up with one of his friends who has just built a new home about half a mile from the school. Dirty cheap rent and a spot in a garage...can't beat that with a stick! I can't wait to graduate and move to lansing.

Anyone else going to MSUCOM?

Did you just get accepted today DC girl??

Congrats! :horns:

YF.

No, I got accepted back in OCT

I'm kinda of in limbo right now about where I'm going to live. My situation is that I live in Ann Arbor, and I have a house and a family. I thought about just commuting from Ann Arbor, but I'm not sure that is wise. Anybody out there that is commuting to MSU or thinking about it. I was just concerned about moving my family now then having to move again to the base hospital.
See you guys at orientation!

That's a really toughy spot to be in. How long does it take you to make that drive? I don't think I could do it if it was any more than an hour. Whatever the case, I don't envy your position! Good luck with all that and congratulations on your acceptance!

Does anyone know if it is true that the class has been filled? I heard that they are interviewing only for wait-list spots. I havn't heard from them in a few weeks and am wondering if I should call.

call them tomorrow and ask them. that is the easiest way to find out. try to talk to the director of admissions, she is pretty honest, but you will most likely have to leave her a message (or just ask for her e-mail).

don't know about the class being full or not, but i know they have a fair number of acceptances. people are still interviewing though, i saw them come through today.

IDPHARM - if you call the school, ask for kathy schafer, the admissions director, about commuting. i have a few friends in our class that commute from as far away as rochester and flint. it can be done, but if you want to hear about it from people that actually do it, call the school and ask for some email addy's and write to a couple of students. i would post email for them here, but i didn't ask their permission.

congrats soon-to-be-spartans! MSU rocks, i love my education thus far and i am sure you will too. its hella-tough sometimes but thus is life, and its also got its rewards. cya all in the fall

MSU-COM 2007

anybody else been accepted recently? good luck to all of you who are still waiting!

Well I have some good news and bad news.

Good news

I just received a letter in the mail stating that the review of my file has been completed and I have been placed on the alternate list, It goes on to say: In the event that we don't have an opening in the class for you this year, the Committee has offered you a guaranteed place in the Class of 2009.

Bad news: 🙁

Well now I have an even tougher decision to make on top of which school to attend. Do I take a year off first? MSU gives me that option. It would be nice to play around for a year knowing that I will be starting medical school. Hmm...

I was accepted at MSUCOM Oct.2/03. I did my undergrad there as well. I LOVE THAT PLACE!!! Hope to get to know some of my class mates.

Did anyone else on the alternate list receive a letter this week stating what "quartile" they are in?

YoungFaithful, I am curious to know where you ended up on that list......would you be willing to pm me and let me know? I know you have been waiting patiently, and I wish you the best of luck.

I also am curious about the quartiles. I'm rooting for all of you and I hope that May brings good news--deadlines for dropping multiple acceptances are rapidly approaching! :luck:

did you contact msucom to find out what this means??? does anyone know?
how many applicants are in each quartile?
have they used the "quartile system" in previous years? if so, what quartiles generally get accepted?
and has the alternate list began to move???

This is what I know... please fill it in what you know or make it more accurate.

1st quartile: ??
2nd quartile: ??
3rd quartile: unlikely acceptance
4th quartile: highly unlikely acceptance/would be surprising
