I read on another post that the only rotations that MSUCOM students can do outside of the MSUCOM system (as in, their out-time) are still within the state of Michigan. Does this mean away rotations outside Michigan are not allowed?

I've grown up in Michigan and I'm currently enrolled at a Michigan school, but I'm not sure I want to stay in this state. Would a lack of an away-rotation option hurt my chances at getting an out of state residency?

Nope, there is no such limitation. You can pretty much rotate anywhere you want for up to four month, I believe. They even have international rotations.

Summer of 3rd year = rotations already, so that is not even an option. All schools choose their rotations sometime during their 2nd year.

Base hospital selection is done in the beginning of the fall of 2nd year.

I don't know if people are going to have much info for you in here. Did you search 'MSU' in the OD/pre-OD forums?? May have better luck there.

I don't think MSU has optometry program...

A friend of mine who finished at MSUCOM a year ago did a rotation in Malawi Africa and another one near big sky Montana and spent the winter skiing in his downtime...so I'm pretty sure you can do some rotations outside of the state of Michigan
