MSW programs with psychoanalysis?

people told me in the psy-d forums that if i wanted to do therapy as a psychologist i might as well get a MSW...but none of the masters programs i looked up have anything to do with psychotherapy...what gives?
How can i get a MSW and get trained to do to be a psychologist?

To be a clinical psychologist you need to graduate from a doctoral program (Ph.D., Psy.D., or Ed.D.). The recommendation to get a Masters degree most likely occurred because it is a quicker route for people who want to just do therapy.

An MSW is a Masters in Social Work.....which prepares you to be a social worker. Many social work programs offer some psychotherapy training, though it is quite different than being a psychologist.

Psychoanalysis is a specific type of psychotherapy training that typically requires quite a bit of training after your schooling. It is not as popular anymore, but some people still pursue it.

If I were you, I would get my MSW first, and then take part in a certificate program for psychoanalysis. I'm not 100% correct, but I'm pretty sure that MSW psychoanalysis programs are near non-existent. Those that do exist may not have proper accredidation to later obtain licensure, so double check anything you come across. Psychoanalysis is a really great study, but it has been going out of phase for a long time.

An MSW program really wold not have the time to focus on psychoanalysis. given that its a two year program. However, LCSW's can be admitted to the analytic training institutes just like clinical psychologists.

If you just want to do therapy, you might only need a master's degree depending on the state you live in. No need for a doctorate unless you want to do research, teach, or conduct assessments.
