I have friends at Mamonides and they aren't happy.
I have been to Mt. Sinai and knew someone who did his gpr there. He was very happy, did a lot of endo, learned a lot. However, when I went there on a rotation, most of the residents complained. I guess everyone has a different experience and it's what you make out of it. I'd choose Mt. Sinai if I were you (then you can live in Manhattan!).

I would pick Mt. Sinai. Of course I am biased since I did my GPR there. I have been to the Maimonides clinic. I think I recall it being more spacious than Mt. Sinai, but I don't know much about their clinical program. The most obvious benefit to Mt. Sinai over Maimonides is that you can live in Manhattan and be right next to the park.

thanks gryffindor,
I was wondering if you could tell me the what you liked and disliked about mt sinai?? Also, I know most people are looking for the best clinical program, but I'm actually looking for e easiest and least stressful.. do you think mt sinai would be less or more stressful than mt siani???

I Intervied at Mamonides. I didnt like the program because there are no specialist attendings. There is only one attending who is there seeing his own patients ( 2 at one time ) and you only call him if you run into a problem. No dedicated assistants.

I do not know much about Mt. Sinai.

There were definitely many specialist and GPattendings at Mt. Sinai, and they gave lectures in their specialty almost every day. There is also a Pedo and OMS residency there and you get to interact with them since they are all in the same clinic; this is not the case at Maimonides from what I recall because their Pedo and Ortho residents were located at a different facility. There were 3 assistants for the 8 GPR residents (7 PGY1 + 1 PGY2) when I was there. I too was looking for an "easy and less stressful" program at the time because my goal was to get into ortho and not necessarily be doing more intense GP procedures. I think Mt. Sinai was a good fit for me from that perspective because you could make your time there as involved or as laid back as you wanted. We had 4 weeks of vacation in addition to federal holidays and some sick days, although you had to take your vacation in 1 week blocks.

It was a little stressful in the beginning because you are on call with a fellow PGY1 resident (the 2 of you go to the ER together when called there) for the first two months getting used to how the ER works so you end up going there a lot since the on-call rotation is about every 3 - 4 days. But once we got past those 2 months it wasn't bad. It is not a level 1 trauma center so you didn't get called to the ER to suture up gunshot wounds which I had no interest in treating. Most of the calls to the ER were for toothaches and draining abscesses, but occasionally something serious did roll in. If you had an interest in suturing gunshot wounds, you could hang out with the OMS residents when they went to the affiliated trauma 1 hospital in Elmhurst and take in-house call with them there (we had 1 guy in our group who used to do this and is in an OMS program now). I think the worst part of the residency was the hospital and department politics, but I am in another hospital residency now for ortho and I see the same stupid hospital and department political nonsense going on here as I saw at Mt. Sinai so it's not really unique to Mt. Sinai.
