MU-COM vs CCOM

I saw this as a thread before but the person who posted it was from Chicago. That being said, money is a huge factor for me. Marian has much cheaper tuition and I think cheaper living costs. BUT CCOM is a well established school with great rotation sites.

Any insight onto which I should choose?

Personally I'd choose CCOM simply because of the security and the good connections the school seems to have. MUCOM might do very well and is probably well known in Indiana, but it still hasn't graduated a single class. CCOM on the other hand is one of the oldest schools with established clinical site connections and numerous alumni members all over the country.

That said, how much is the difference, $15k/yr? I don't know, really it comes down to where you want to end up.

I'd chase the money go to MUCOM. Do research through IU and rotate there. Then match there and not worry about DO reputation. Because it really doesn't matter when you're going for an ACGME residency

You can do research at IU over the summer. That's it. Marian students are not allowed to rotate at IU Health University, Methodist, Riley, and Eskenazi. Those are for IU medical students only. You can rotate there as sub-i in 4th year however, but cannot go there for core rotations. New clerkship director at Marian only allows 2 away rotations in 4th year. SDNers need to stop making MU looks like it is one of the top tier DO schools. Go to CCOM.

No such thing as tiers in DO schools. There are just more established ones. I also didn't say they get to do cores there. I said rotate there (i.e. Audition at an IU program). Also 12k per year extra isn't worth it to me. That's >50k difference once interest is added on. Medical school cost is out of hand and COA should be a big factor for students. (Especially if people play into the fear of DO school being a path to PC)

The 2 away rotations is a major deturant to going to MUCOM, especially for AOA programs. They prefer that you audition. Also, you can pull a strong ACGME university residency spot with a good audition (of course speciality dependent).

Make sure to look into the tuition at CCOM and call their financial aid office. They will straight up tell you that that the tuition will, indeed, go up every year by 5%-12% for the next 6 years. If you want to go into primary care or EM, just go to Marian. If you are looking for a surgery/surgical sub-specialty/IM/IM-sub-specialty, look into CCOM.

Wow that sucks. Why would they sabotage their own students that way? Especially when so many AOA residency programs require you to rotate there to even be considered.

New director is a retired thoracic surgeon. Apparently, he wants students to stay in Indiana. You still have the other electives, but they are must be done at affiliated hospitals. It means rotates at IU's hospitals is considering as an away. The school wants to create more PCP for Indiana, not to create more specialists or have them match outside of Indiana.

I know a student there and they're doing almost all of their fourth year rotations away... Most of them back in their home state

Did you even read what I wrote? The new director is just appointed a few weeks ago. He made these changes for class 2018 and later on.

60,000$ is the extra tuition in the long run. Something that few med students have any concept of because to them 200k=150k=250k=280k Is the difference between CCOM and MUCOM 60,000$? I highly doubt it.

It is all about personal preference. I'm the type of person who thinks for colleges, unless you go to an ivy, or at least one of the top 20 or so schools, it isn't worth paying private school tuition and would rather go to a public university instead.

However, there are still tons of students who would rather pay extra to go to a private university even though it offers not much difference than state schools.

It really is personal preference.

That's still an issue though. Many many AOA residency programs basically require an audition to be considered... are MU-COM student supposed to have a 2-deep rank list?

66k for tuition (if increased by 4.5% next year) is too much to stomach. I would stick with Marian.

I would choose CCOM on the basis of having a solid alumni base to network with.
