John Muir out here in CA attempted an aggressive outpatient Path and Lab business with marketing etc in same vein as the Stanford initiative. Both began relatively solidly and both fell apart with decreased reimbursements and intense competition.

It appears Muirlabs is on life support now officially and is being peddled for sale, likely to Lab Corp. (and I wouldnt think they are getting top dollar...).

This on the heels of Dignity Healthcare dumping their outpatient to Quest.

MASSIVE consolidation.

I cant help but think there is about to be a significant number of Pathologists looking for work since that level of OP lab work pulls through a huge number of biopsies from offices...

Labcorp and quest will take over the big hospital labs it looks like, especially with labs heading toward cost center status with all the reimbursement cuts. Hospitals own the physician offices, quest/labcorp will own the lab and then competition will be gone. I am glad I am leaving this field for sure. 😀

You've mentioned you're leaving the field multiple times now without elaborating further. Are you planning on telling us what exactly it is that you'll be doing instead? I think we would all be interested in the answer; I know my curiosity has been piqued.

Farming. I'm already making more income from that than pathology. Been working on this plan for decades once I realized pathology is a cesspool that I want no part of for the rest of my working life. 😡 Dont get excited, my job wont be filled.

This is really good to know. Muir Health System invested a lot of money and resources into this lab operation. My regional hospital system is considering expanding their laboratory outreach business. This is a perfect case study warning health systems to STAY AWAY. Leave the $1.50 CBCs and $2 C-MET panels to the megalabs DGX and LH. If you think outpatient AP is a race to the bottom, try CP in a state that allows client billing.

Yup yup. The sad thing is Pathology groups who play along with it and have the rug pulled out from underneath them when the spigot is turned off and the OP lab is sold..because I can pretty guarantee one cent of the sale isnt going to the group at Muirlabs..

Lots of mouths to feed and they are about to get whole lotta less cheddar!

MuirLab Fail! I have been hearing this for a while now, so it is true? I work for a competitor in the NorthernCalifornia area and the rumors regarding the buyout of MuirLab have been intense for the last several months. I also had heard it was LabCorp Or Diagnostic Laboratories and Radiology(Trident). I guess we will all suffer the same fate as the larger more cost effective labs gobble up the smaller expensive labs. It turns out they werent billing correctly and lost millions of dollars in revenue, also, I heard John Muir Health has some corruption in the upper eschalon siphoning money from lab operations. Maybe this is a constant in The hospital operations that also have labs. I hope my company isnt soon up for sale.
