Hi everyone,

It is my understanding that after April 1st, schools that have wait listed you are able to the schools where you are holding an acceptance. My question is - can schools that have wait listed you for the MD program see that you are holding an acceptance to a MD/PhD (MSTP) program?

I ask because I applied to both MD and MD/PhD programs this cycle, and am currently holding acceptances at a top 20 MD, mid tier MD, and mid tier MD/PhD, and am on the wait list at multiple top 10/20 MD schools among others. At this point, I'm trying to maximize my chances of getting of the wait list at one of the top 10 MD schools, and I am concerned that these schools will see that I have an acceptance to an MD/PhD program and be less likely to accept me off the wait list (although, I did send a letter of intent to my top choice school).

Any advice or insight, particularly from adcoms such as @gyngyn who may have experience with this, is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Decision day I believe is april 30th without paying large deposit amounts correct? Be careful with that unless you have large funds in reserve.

Yes, we can see the type of program to which you have been accepted.

Got it, thank you so much for your response. I've ultimately decided that I would like to do MD rather than MD/PhD and am planning on withdrawing from the MD/PhD program I'm accepted to - would it raise any red flags to the top 10 schools I'm currently wait listed at if I withdrew from the MD/PhD (since I believe that they record the multiple acceptance report at multiple times, so they can see where I have withdrawn from as well). I.e, would they think that I'm not potentially interested in research since I turned down and MD/PhD program and be less likely to accept me? Basically, I'm trying to increase my odds of getting off the MD wait lists and am trying to figure out what I can do to maximize those chances.

Thanks again!

I believe that you can actually get into trouble with schools for this, possibly leading to rescinded acceptances. So I would not mess around with this regardless of your "reserve funds."

You should hold the acceptance you want most after 4/30.
Dropping an MD/PhD will most likely be forgotten in a week or so.
This process has so many moving parts, your issue is unlikely to deter an interested school.

Thanks for the responses everyone - I will be deciding on which acceptance I want the most and then withdraw my other acceptances before April 30th.

Yes, I've come to realize that perhaps an MD would be sufficient for my career goals... as of now, I think I want to be in academic medicine, doing clinical practice and some research, but not necessarily be running my own lab.

I'd think pretty damn hard about that choice before you drop it.

Do you have mentors you can talk to?

I've thought about it pretty extensively, and if anything my mentors are supporting me going the MD route. To be honest, I think I had unrealistic expectations of what doing an MD/PhD entails when I first applied. Not to mention, I wasn't too keen on the location of my MD/PhD acceptance, and I'm not sure how I'd feel about 8 to 9 years there. I figure if I already have an MD acceptance at a school I really loved and could see myself being happy in for four years, it would make more sense to go that route.

Your avatar is giving me seizures, Jesus.

I think that's a fair decision, OP. Many people forget how long it takes to complete an MD/PhD, and assume they are done concurrently without taking breaks from the MD. If you're not really big having a huge research career, you're saving a lot of time and headaches.

Great to hear that. Congratulations on having figured it out.

Seriously, not a hint of sarcasm in my post, but your logic is sound. I just wanted to make sure that you had talked to people that could *actually* give you realistic info.

I should change it soon. I got into one of the schools I liked most post interview, so I no longer have the freak outs 🙂

Hey, congrats! Hehe, your avatar describes the cycle quite well. Curious; when did you interview at Albany? I was there in very late September.

December, I believe. Everything feels like a blur now. I found out like 2 weeks after interviewing. They moved fast!

Both the schools I got into let me know within two weeks.

@gyngyn

What about pipeline programs that guarantee direct matriculation into their MD program after successful completion of an SMP? Can schools your waitlisted at see an acceptance like this since it is associated with an MD program to some extent?

If so, how can it affect gaining an acceptance from a waitlist?

I have seen UMKC students admitted in the off-season.
Once their acceptance is confirmed and sent to AMCAS we can see them.
Many of these programs accept late in the cycle pending completion of requirements.
