has anyone ever externed 2,3 times at the same school in hopes of making a deep(hopefully good) impression on the pd, chair, et al.?? is that a good idea?

Not a good idea. The general idea is to "not put all your eggs in one basket". Besides, no dental student, no matter how wonderful and bright will leave such an impression that a PD would say, "wow, I really miss that guy, he was wonderful. I sure hope he comes back and externs a few more times..." Having externs at an OMFS program is important. Doing externships is extremely important. But if they weren't important or they weren't helpful, I'd think programs would just as soon not worry about enterntaining the "paddowans". Besides, you run the risk of a program not liking you. You never truly know what a program thinks of you.
If you're really excited about one place, do a long externship (3-4 weeks) instead of one week. If you did an externship somewhere, liked it and get an interview, it may be appropriate to do a short "second-look" return trip.
