Hi - I am applying to EM for the 2018 match. I am bit concerned about the 2 LoAs I had to take:

1) I took LoA for one semester during beginning of 4th year this year due to family obligations. One of my grandparents overseas, whom I am very close to, was unexpectedly diagnosed with pancreatic cancer that was determined to be terminal. He passed away after a short battle. I had numerous obligations involving travelling overseas that disrupted multiple rotations in beginning of 4th year. I was advised by the dean to match next year and to take a LoA for the entire semester retroactively for tuition purposes.

2) I took a LoA for the first rotation in beginning of 3rd year clerkships to study for Step 1. I had a physical illness that distracted from my studying. I have provided medical documentation of this to the dean's office. However the MSPE will still just state "administrative leave for step 1". I plan to fully explain this on ERAS.

Will these 2 LoAs sink my application? Thank you!!

I dont think it will hurt you too much, especially the family one. The other one will depend I think on how your school reports it on the MSPE

You're fine. Don't even worry about these. The people with long and twisted careers with multiple breaks have a harder time. Try to stay with it from this point on and if you need help with your ERAS or personal statement, you can contact me via http://sonyamurraymd.wixsite.com/mysite and I will help you for free.
