I have seen in so many threads that people suggest covering one particular characteristic in their diversity essay. I don't think I have one characteristic that can provide me ~500 words of insightful commentary. I could stretch either out from 300, but I don't think they would be particularly useful at that point.

My two characteristics:

1) Engineer; research lab focuses on engineering application in cell culture and cancer stem cell optimization; very much integrated, relevant, but not all that unique; I like the angle of how engineering gives you a more logic based and sometimes innovative perspective

2) Musician; member of the marching band - a huge time commitment; can play multiple instruments; enjoy playing for leisure but no real organized participation since HS besides the marching band; not really satisfied with how to frame it so that it is especially relevant (read, an entire essay's worth of relevance) to medicine

Perhaps you could talk about how music requires attentive practice with the goal of gradual, constant improvement over time. I think the dedication and patience it takes to master an instrument and read music fluently is very similar to medicine in that way.

I'd be more inclined toward the engineering, since you seem more passionate about it. But if you've only got 300 good words about it, don't stretch it to 500!
