Hi future MDs,

I been trying to get into the habit of taking a "one-PER-day" (notice I changed the name slightly) multivitamin and everytime i take one I get a HUGE nausea feeling..

Now, I'm a male 18-25 years old and, as far as I know, in shape and in good health. Could this nausea be from excess Iron or, maybe, some sort of an allergic reaction?

Its funny, because when I took the "Men's formula" one-PER-day multivitamin I felt perfectly fine.

Anyone else had this problem? Thanks.

Are you taking it with food? What are the differences in the ingredients between the men's and regular vitamin besides the iron (you shouldn't be supplementing iron anyway unless you're anemic or something)? The easiest thing to do is just to skip the reg and use the men's one.

I did take it with and without food and both times I felt nausea. Not sure about the ingredients, I'll get back to you on that one..

Try posting this thread under allopathic, you should get a better advice over there.

I wouldn't even bother taking them at all. At your age, you don't need to be taking vitamins as long as you are eating a reasonably balanced diet. Save yourself the nausea, money, and hassle and just stop taking the vitamins.

This is true, but if you don't eat from all food groups, then a multivit isn't a bad idea. Most of us eat well enough that we have no real need for a daily multivit.

That said, if you want to take one, how about sticking to that mens' formula that didn't make you sick.

If it is in tablet form, it may be best to take a half-tablet at a time. From what I've noticed about many multivitamins is that they provide a whole lot more nutrients than your body can possibly absorb (especially GNC's "MegaMen" - my friend takes them before bedtime and wakes up with neon-green urine. I'm no expert, but that can't be good for your kidneys). If your nausea continues, just stop taking it altogether.

You said that you didn't get sick when you took the men's formula?

The main difference between most men's formulas and general or women's formulas is that the men's formula doesn't contain iron.

Men don't need iron because we don't bleed during a period. Iron accumulates in the body and can be toxic.

Always stick to an iron-free multivitamin if you're a guy. It's also a good idea to make sure that a lot of the vitamin A you consume is in the form of beta carotene, at least when you're taking a multivit.

You shouldn't be sick from taking a multivitamin. My guess is that you're stacking too much iron or something else is up.

If you're looking for a good one without iron, I personally recommend Twin Labs One-A-Day w/o iron. It's in capsule form, so it won't contain all the fillers in tablets, either. Always take multivits with food; they absorb better.

I'm a proponent of multivits.

1) most American (well, Western and increasingly global) diets are crap.
2) a lot of our food is processed, meaning we lose the nutritional value in our foods
3) we nuke a lot of our food, depleting the levels of antioxidants
4) our soil is depleted as we plant crop after crop on the same soil
5) our food distribution system leaves a long time between harvest and consumption, again depleting nutrients.
6) there is all kinds of evidence out their that supplementation with antioxidants is good for your health. I'd personally recommend everyone stack vitamin C and E (not synthetically produced) on top of a multivit, but that's me.

Ha - I guess men have periods...we just don't bleed during our period 😉

Actually I've had the same experience with multi-vits. I don't take them anymore.
