I am at MUSC right now and I really love it. The weather is great. (There does seem to be a shortage of boys aorund here, but it makes the hunt more exciting).
I live downtown in a little studio about 2 blocks form campus. There's a great nightlife here, awesome restaurants and the beach! The deans office insists that students have fun and there are always parties and events. They feed us very well-for the first few weeks of class you do not have to worry about meals.
Professors here are committed to students. They want you to succeed. The Center for Academic Excellence provides tutors for free for any med school course. From day 1 you have patient contact, and you work with docs in the community in the afternoons. You can do as much or as little as you want. This year I edited the school newspaper, shadowed a radiologist once a week, did research and only felt stressed during exam weeks. (Block exams are great-we get the week off to study and then take the 4-6 hr exam at the end of the week). Then party and relax all weekend. Its great!
MUSC has the #1 service program of all US medical schools-its called MUSC Gives Back. The students run a clinic called Crisis Ministries in urban charleston. This city needs health care and we provide it while learning.
I am so happy that I chose to come to MUSC-its far away from my home. But i will be here for a long time and it was not hard to make charleston my new home.
Good luck with your decision and PM me if you have any specific Q's.
