I don't know... got in a Jagermeister mood and was pondering the upcoming New Year, philosophy, the metaphysical and spiritual world in no certain order and put on the one song that I'd like to think, defines my Mojo---U2's "ONE". I'm not much into music, but that song always stirs me. So what song defines your mojo? Regards, ----Zippy

anything by notorious B.I.G. and junior mafia

Hard question to answer Zip. Music has been a huge part of my life since I got a tape deck boom-box when I was a kid and ran out to buy.. a Beatles tape, and a Run-DMC tape. My tastes are all over the map (the nice word is eclectic, friends just say "weird").

Probably would have to pick Supernaut from Black Sabbath's 1972 release Vol. 4 from a pure mojo standpoint, but pretty much any song on that album would be a close second.

Tonight I'm digging through my virtual crates and spinning some MF DOOM - just an amazing flow and sense for wordplay (tonight's album.. "Mm.. Food") - along with some early era New Model Army, because they are like sonic comfort food when I'm reading.

Tough question though. I'm even tempted to say my mojo is in the demo tape I cut with some friends back in 1995, but that's cheating 😉

I'm with you on U2, Zip...but for me it's their Live at Slane Castle, Ireland version of "Where the Streets Have no Name."

Check it out. The video does well to show why they're an incredible concert band.

Supernaut from Black Sabbath's 1972 release Vol. 4 from a pure mojo standpoint,

Speaking of industrial, you may want to check out 1000 homo DJ's, a now defunct Ministry side-project, cover of this song.

Been there done that. The cover is OK, but not as moving as the original. Sabbath was on their game in the early-mid 70's. Ministry had their moments, and they birthed Pigface, and a Pigface concert gave me the opportunity to meet Meg Lee Chin. Wish she would resurface and gig this side of the ocean.

My hands down favorite industrial acts are GODFLESH(or most anything Justin Broadrick is involved in, e.g. Techno Animal, Ice) and early-mid era Skinny Puppy. Godflesh's early albums are bone-crushing soul-smothering works.

Even better, check out the cover of "Into The Void", by Monster Magnet. Multiple sweet riffs in one tune. If you heard the supernaut cover I'm sure you heard this one.

love their album Spine of God. saw them in Germany the night after a show with Victims Family and Nation of Ulysses. pure mayhem.

Johan, ya could have fooled me. I got ya pegged as bein' a Journey man--perhaps "Faithfully". Wrap yourself around that song tonight--It's Cali and it's you. Regards, ----Zip

I sooooo wish I could operate with you guys, I was trapped in the OR the other day with...*shudder*...nothing but Celine Dion, and the same CD over and over and OVER again. *shudder*

must...listen...to...something...better....

Any suggestions? I like everything (well except Kenny G, Michael Bolton, and the aforementioned Ms. Dion)

similar situation once here with one of the neurosurgery attendings... was working a long case with him and he's got this iPod full of dentist office jazz. weak stuff. after about 2 hours it must have skipped to the next playlist and Eazy E starts bumpin. the case got so much better after that. 😀

I have a pretty eclectic taste as well. Classic hard rock is my favorite. My ipod has Iron Maiden, Dio, April Wine, Blue Oyster Cult, AC/DC, Van Halen etc. Dave Matthews Band takes up way too much of my iPod. I have almost the entire catalog including some rare stuff. U2 probably ranks second with almost their entire catalog. I love it that they have put even the rare stuff on iTunes. In my opinion, U2's best song ever is One Tree Hill off of Joshua Tree.
Other favorites include:
Peter Gabriel
Collective Soul
Jane's Addiction
Led Zeppelin
Cheap Trick
James Taylor
Pearl Jam
Foo Fighters
Alice In Chains
Yes
Big Audio Dynamite
The Cure
The Cult

I believe that one of the best studio albums ever was Billy Squier's Don't Say No. Not a bad song on it.

I also have a wide variety of others I like to listen to including such weird stuff as Squirrel Nut Zippers, Brian Setzer Orchestra, Sinatra, and String Cheese Incident. I agree with orthonut, no Kenny G, Bolton, or Celine would ever be allowed on my iPod. I generally don't listen to rap(a few exceptions) or country.

I got two mojos, old and new.
Old: Steve Vai- Erotic Nightmares Joe Satriani:Flying in a Blue Dream
New: Foo Fighters- The Pretender Finger Eleven-Paralyzer
Really Old Mojo: Prince (Old Prince)

OK make that three mojos

And Austin Powers only had one.....

the new wu-tang album "the 8 diagrams" is pretty good. not quite a classic like their debut, but i think better than the rest of their efforts since then.

*sniff*

How much would I have to pay to get one of y'all to switch species?

I think I'll die if exposed to Celine Dion one more time. Either that or the anaesthesia CVT will... there can be only one

I swear, I'd rather listen to nails on a chalk board while no-pre-med-non-fasting-halothane-induction anaesthetizing a 2000KG obese no-necked hippo with diabetes, bad veins, three legs and DCM than listen to Celine.

Seriously, I really don't think I'm THAT hard to please, I like almost everything posted in this thread. Not that in-to gangsta, or White Zombie, but I still like it enough to hum along/not be bothered by it.

Oh, and through expiramenting I figured out that one can turn off the stereo in our OR by throwing a stack of well-moistened sponges at it. Moistened with what, I dunno, It did kinda splatter, and if the anaesthesia CVT refuses to change the music one more time she may just get hit with some pink mist.

I do the sponge counts myself, so I have myself to blame for the extra hassle.

Dj Muggs vs Rza. Sweet.

Old school, Talib Kwali and Mos Def's Black Starr. Tight.

New school, Edan. WTF?!

if you don't already have Mr. Lif's "I Phantom", get it.

youtube vid of the single "Live from the Plantation" --> http://youtube.com/watch?v=DwRlS2UVHA8

also worth a peep is Jean Grae's epic school-shooting single "Taco Day".

there is a youtube vid for Taco Day but it only covers the first half of the song, before the character sets her plan for vengeance in motion. if you find a copy of the whole song, you'll understand why shooting a video for the second half would have been... problematic. the first time i heard it i hit rewind a few times (she did WHAT to grandpa??) --> http://youtube.com/watch?v=l5enxTUA6cU

i must admit to being a closet Prince fan myself (old prince of course)...nothing better if you are in a funky mood.

absolute classic. "thieves in the night" might be one of the tightest hiphop songs ever cut.

for consistency from beginning to end though, i think kweli and hi-tek's "train of thought" delivers a little more.

For me on Black Star, its the song Respiration:

So much on my mind that i can't recline
Blastin holes in the night til she bled sunshine
Breathe in, inhale vapors from bright stars that shine
Breathe out, weed smoke retrace the skyline
Heard the bass ride out like an ancient mating call
I can't take it y'all, i can feel the city breathin
Chest heavin, against the flesh of the evening
Sigh before we die like the last train leaving

Goosebumps when I first head it way back when...

I listen to just about every genre out there, from Coltrane to Iron Maiden to Wu Tang, but every time I hear Rush's "Working Man", on the stereo, I turn up those 2500 watt towers to 11 man. Just somethin about it.

You guys make me feel old. I can only tolerate rap/hip hop and the angry growling music in small doses. I like the heavy stuff as much as the next guy, but the growling that counts as singing still baffles me. Now I know how my parents felt when I came home playing my "devil's music."

you're old when you stop appreciating new music 😉

now i'm not a huge fan of british grime/garage/two-step but i can appreciate what those kids are doing.

I have extremely eclectic musical tastes & listen to everything from bluegrass to classic rock to techno to goth to glitter rock to country to opera to about damned near anything except rap or hip-hop.

The two favs that come to mind right now:

Boston: More Than a Felling

Pink Floyd: Comfortably Numb

Both being germain to being an anesthesiologist, don't ya think?

Bender; "Isolate"

If that don't get you ready for rippin down a mountainside your not alive.
