In my SUNY Downstate acceptance letter it says that I must provide proof that I've completed the required CPR course (only the American Heart Association's Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers course is accepted) before class starts. This is the first I've heard of such a requirement; do other schools have it too?

My school requires students to be CPR certified by the AHA, but they set up classes for us in the Fall. I would assume you can contact the school to see if this would be available during orientation or if you need to make your own arrangements.

How long does it take to get this certification?

I never came across that requirement when I was applying. We do BLS our 1st year here, and would assume most other schools are similar and wouldn't require to have it in order to start.

Relax, it only takes four hours to get certified for BLS by the AHA. A lot of places offer the class, just go to AHA's website and you can find a place near you. After that, you're ready to bring people back from the dead.

CPR certification classes usually only last a couple weeks.

UVA requires BLS certification before matriculation as well

I'm an AHA BLS instructor. The course is supposedly six hours, but most instructors usually get it done in four or four and a half. a lot of times we teach them through libraries or other organizations. If you're still in undergrad, you should also see if any are offered through your school. I know at princeton i taught through a school agency.

Yea I got my cpr cert from the AHA for bls providors. Took about 4.5 hours, and its really easy.

You will soon be able to complete your initial certification for the AHA BLS for Healthcare Providers course online. Keep an eye on that link. For those of you who already have it (or the American Red Cross' CPR for Professional Rescuers), you can already complete the didactic requirements for renewal online.

Both options require you to find an actual BLS Instructor who can do your skills testing.

Thanks everyone! 🙂

A handful of schools require CPR before 3rd year (when you actually will be working in the wards), but those that do, generally offer the students courses at the school to meet this requirement. I've never heard of a school saying go find and get CPR certified on your own.
