So a few months ago, I was speaking with an Los Angeles based dentist and I had informed him that I was applying to Midwestern University in Glendale, Arizona. At the time, he mistook MWU for the Arizona School Dentistry and Oral Health.

He told me that he had visited ASDOH and that for first and second year courses, like gross anatomy, etc., they bring in professors from other colleges to teach the course in a condensed, 2-3 week fashion. I've visited their website and found this to be true.

I'm wondering if this is true for the curriculum at MWU? I checked their faculty link and it appears they only have a few, full-time professors. Can anybody shed some light on this for me, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks in advance!

I don't know about MWU, but a dentist in my neighborhood in Arizona told me that ASDOH only had a 44% boards pass rate for their first graduating class. That's horrible! Even mediocre schools hit low 90s, and most are aroun 95-98% That was a major contributing factor in my deciding to not apply there.

ASDOH's board passing rates are awesome now, I think last year only 2 students failed part II for lame reasons and then passed their second time around (I think one of the students patients didn't show or qualify or something like that so they failed).

As far as MWU, I think that there are dental-specific professors (listed on webstie) and then the science professors are shared between the pod students, pharm students, PA students etc. They said in their interview that the dental students will not have classes with non-dental students but I think the science professors will be shared between the schools within campus which is why the faculty roster is skimpy (only teach at the dental school).

Also, I do not believe that MWU will be using the modular based system that ASDOH uses, at least that was the impression I got at the open house. ASDOH is a small school where a modular system makes sense, where as larger state schools like Buffalo or UCLA that have a huge list of employed faculty can sustain itself with in-house professors. MWU has so many health programs the professors can float around and be busy the whole year where ASDOH focuses on one subject for a few weeks then flys the professor back home.

The curriculum is probably a mixture of your traditional and ASDOH's. They do have a full time staff and professors. Its seems that we will focus on one system or part of the body at once for a few weeks at a time and learn all the biochemistry, pharmacology, anatomy, physiology, histology, microbiology, and anything else we need, and then move to the next system. The first year has 3 10 week quarters followed by part 1 of the boards. Also, you will be in the sim lab everyweek too.

haisha ni narou,

Thanks for the feedback, I really appreciate it. So you think MWU will teach the science courses like pharmacology, etc. like a regular dental school would, not in condensed fashion?

So you interviewed at MWU? Would you mind if I PM'ed you with some questions about your interview?

Thanks for the information! So you think MWU will teach their science courses like biochem, histology, etc. like a traditional dental school?

By any chance are you attending MWU this coming Fall?
