I have compiled a short list of med schools and ranked their match list. This list is ABSOLUTELY FLAWED so use it as your own discretion. Maybe it'll help some of you out with decisions (hopefully not). I couldn't rank all the schools due to time constraint and inability to find the 2004 match list for certain schools.

Rank System
1) Speciality point - 2 point for every speciality that's competitive (ENT, Ortho, Optha, Plastic, Neuro Surg, Derm, Radio, Uro)
2) Honor Roll - 2 points for every match into a non-affiliated honor roll hospital (Yes I can do individual by category but I already wasted enough time, though I did reference it for pediatric). A match into an affiliated honor roll hospital only gets 1.5 pt due to the inherent advantage one would get.

The scores are added up and divided by class size to get an index.

School index Spec nHonor aHonor Class size
Vandy 1.67 21 47 25 104
Weill 1.62 23 38 31 104
NYU 1.18 51 51 0 173
UPitt 1.15 24 23 48 144
MSSM .79 16 26 0 106
RWJ .74 26 28 0 145
Drexel .74 37 37 0 200
Tuft .61 30 23 0 173
NYMC .52 34 15 0 190

Side note: There's probably a lot of mistake in there since I didn't double check. Please make any corrections to this list and add in all the other schools I did not get to.

Edit: Please fix my formatting, I have no clue how to fix it.

Hey, I fixed it for you. Quote this message to see how I did it. Note:I used the code and /code tags. (Must be enclosed in square brackets) (You even get a cool little box)

Does anyone think that Drexel's match list is better then Tufts???

doesn't drexel have a class size of 250, not 200?

I think the idea of "ranking" match lists by some arbitrary criteria is a poor way to assign relative value to different med schools. Pre-meds (myself included) have no way of intelligently assessing any match list, especially since we don't know the demographics/career interests of any particular graduating class. Some schools, for example, prepare their students very, very well for primary care specialties. These schools would score very low on this scale. I caution anyone reading this thread to take these rankings with a grain of salt and not to let them influence your school decision in any way.

Fixed the Drexel Class size. The def of honor roll hospital can be found on US News World Report.

Adding Stanford
Editing Vandy: Made some error

As for bones's comment, like I said, this is flawed. For example, I am sure Weill can easily match into more competitive specialty than NYU if their students cared to do so. Also, some students turn down more competitive teaching hospitals to stay in a certain geographic region. Of course this happens at all med schools so hopefully it somehow balances out.

Code:
School index Spec nHonor aHonor Class size
JHU 1.66 42 28 39 119
Weill 1.62 23 38 31 104
Vandy 1.6 24 45 19 104

thanks for putting this thing together pek. i'm someone who's always trying to evaluate schools in novel ways, so although (as you admit) your system may not be perfect, it's certainly an interesting endeavour. thanks.

At revisits at some places (ie Stanford) I was informed that some students opt not to be included on match lists. So it would be an advantage to divide by the number of those on the list, rather than by the entire class size. Especially given that it is rare at some institutions that an entire class will match in the same cycle.

Nah, there are people who opt not to be on the match in order to further improve their application for Derm. Furthermore, there are people like that at every school so it evens out.

Wow. That's why reading comp. is such a huge part of every standardized exam...

You apparently misunderstood my post.

Some (as in NOT ALL) medical institutions allow their students who have gone through the match to opt NOT to be included in the match-LIST.
