Just finished making my list . Still need to be scheduled . What do you think ? Anything you would replace ?

Psychiatry sub I

Family or Hiv clinic

Appreciate any feedback .

Aiming for psych but still open to neurology, thought this was a good balance .

Do what you want for fourth year electives. For me it was palliative, outpatient psych, family planning. It is your last chance to do things you might not get to do ever again. If you are interested in psych, one elective early to get a letter and you'll be fine.

When I reviewed applications I did not spend much time pouring over someone's fourth year electives. If they had one experience in psych that was good enough. If they had all anesthesia and no psych and didn't explain it in their personal statement, that was a problem.

If you are not sure you want to go into psych, by all means do sub-Is in psych. If you are sure you are going into psych, OK, do one sub-I early so you can talk about it in interviews, but I would do things other than psych after that. You will be doing psych your whole life. Neuro radiology would be helpful. Derm always helps at family get togethers and all of the gunners will have already do derm. Deans letters are written in Sept. so we don't really "see" many of your choices anyway. You have to tell us what you are doing with your MS4 year.

Only thing that I could think of that might be helpful - if there's a rotation available - is sleep medicine. It's something that will certainly be helpful in both psychiatry and neurology but you may not get much exposure to it in residency. I know we don't at my program.

I like cardiology and radiology. Try to get as much practice reading EKGs and plain films as possible- it will serve you well 'tern year

I second sleep medicine. I did a rotation with a guy who was pulm/sleep medicine and it makes you realize how sleep affects general well being, especially depression.

I did almost half a year of icu work as well lol. I really enjoyed icu, you get to see things you wouldn't normally see sometimes. Sure you can get the dkas and stuff, but I've seen some crazy stuff in there too.

I didn't do any psych subis. In hindsight should have probably did one. But oh well, I matched at a place im happy about

This is insight I wish I had gained further during my 4th year. A sleep sub-I really would have helped. There was only so much knowledge and time during this block.

How important are 4th year subIs in Psych (outside of maybe 1 rotation outside of your 3rd year core to prove interest)? Do you look for multiple rotations?

I'm not truly affiliated with academic medicine in the sense of making decisions on who is accepted. Those in the ivory tower relish in this "chore".... I mean labor of love.

Great list, especially first three and in that order. The sub-I, depending on how rigorous your program is, will serve you especially well.

Update: so I finally managed to get my schedule finalized! pretty excited about it.
