So after my first semester, I'm back home for xmas, and today sat down with the family for a roast. Should be good right? Finally some good food etc.

But all I could think of when looking at the carved meat was dissected muscles.. hell I swear I could even smell the formaldehyde on this perfectly cooked meat. It really, really, disturbed me, I barely finished my plate and gagged once or twice.

Before I was a massive carnivore, and have never, ever, been disgusted by meat. Now I don't what to think.. I've got a few friends who traditionally have never liked flesh-looking meat so will eat sausages etc. but not steak. Have I become one of them?

Anyone else go through a period (here's to hoping it's a period!) like this?

During anatomy (Aug-sept this year), I put a moratorium on preparing meat. I didn't have a problem looking at it on my plate if someone else cooked it, but I didn't want to deal with raw meat. This may have been less the result of an aversion to the raw meat itself so much as an aversion to finding out whether I had an aversion. Actually, the only food that really bugged me during and immediately post-anatomy was cauliflower, because it reminded me too much of the preserved brains, but a couple days ago I had cauliflower and didn't think of anything other than cauliflower.

In short, I don't think your experience is that uncommon. Putting distance between yourself and anatomy should help. Give yourself time--you might want to try to slowly work your way up to looking at a roast again. Also, try not to think about it too much--the more you do, the more you will be reminding yourself that cadaver kind of looks like roast.

I got incredible hankerings for steaks, ribs, miscellaneous chunks of meat after dissecting. Maybe I'm weird.

No you aren't: I was the same way, too

To me, feta stuffed olives smell like cadaver

just wait until third-year when you're in the OR at 3 am debriding necrotic tissue from a traumatic amputation and all you can think about is where you can get a medium-rare NY strip when you get off in 4 hours...

80% of the people in my anatomy lab gets hungry during lab, so I'm pretty sure that's the normal behavior. I don't think anyone was turned off meat.

Apparently formalin injected intravenously into rats causes increased salt appetite. Go figure.

It's not normal Kinis, you just have a weak mind.

We had prime rib this Christmas Eve and I noticed some tendon. It was just my immediate family, so I told them how I knew it looked suspiciously like my octogenarian cadaver's plantaris tendon. They were then, expectedly grossed out, but we all ate our delicious meal.

I'm glad to hear someone else say this. I felt like Hannibal Lecter.

I dissected the turkey heart and showed my family how the valves work. Not at all weird.

There's certain foods I can't eat anymore due to anatomy. I'm fine with meat, but there are some other aromas/tastes that make me feel I'm gnawing on my cadaver. You aren't alone.

Not to be rude...but you are only just now realizing human flesh is the same as animal flesh? 😕😕😕😕😕😕

Haha, I couldn't eat chicken off bones the whole time I had lab, or have anything with chicken broth/yellow fat floating ontop. The color was too close. However, it made me crave Burger King like crazy - I couldn't wait to go and get a Whopper after lab.

I also found myself getting hungry in lab, but I would largely attribute that to the fact that it was just before lunch. It didn't make me crave meat specifically, though.

If I may digress slightly, my lab group consisted of varying degrees of foodies. This led to a number of unfortunate conversations about which muscle corresponded with which cut of meat. I now get awkward flashbacks to anatomy when discussing things like skirt steak and tenderloin.

epic

anatomy made me hungry too. never got the weird dreams some people did though, so i was thankful for that.

Anatomy lab made me ravenously hungry most weeks. Near exams, I went to the lab almost everyday and the smell made me nauseous after being exposed to it that many times in a week.

I loved eating steak rare before lab, I like it even more now.

I had the same problem for a while. I think most everyone does. My wife loves cooking in a crock pot and roasts are a large part of that menu in our house. Needless to say, we were without roast for quite a while. After a bit, desensitization happens (it's almost like that's part of the plan! 😉 ) and it isn't a big deal anymore.

The answer is unsatisfactory but just wait it out. You'll eventually be hungry enough to not care any more.

I think it' s normal, you' ll probably be fine with meat when you don' t take anatomy anymore. I used to joke with my classmates about eating a Fascia lata for dinner. Also, i tried to identify in every cow meat cut what muscle it was. Sometimes during neuroanatomy, you go out in the street and you start seeing arteries in the tree branches and weird stuff like that. So don' t worry, it' ll go away.

Didn't have any problems with food or anything when anatomy was in session, but I have heard people getting grossed out by meat. To each his/her own, I suppose.

everytime i look at tenderloin the only thing in my mind is "psoas major"
