Every winter my boyfriend's hands get severely dry to the point of cracking and peeling. He has tried just about every lotion available to avoid this, yet it happens every time the weather gets cold (we live in MI). His hands are almost always cold and clammy as well.

I was thinking it could have something to do with his circulation, but this is only a problem in the winter. Does anyone have any idea what the cause of this could be?

the colder air may be a factor, plus he probably jerks off alot, maybe a solution would be to buy him a pair of gloves and put out.

To the dermatology message board!!!!

That really isn't a strange problem, especially since it happens in the winter. In colder weather, there is generally less humidity outside as compared to the warmer months. In addition, heating leads to very dry indoor conditions. This can result in the skin becoming quite dry, even to the point of cracking open and becoming quite painful. A lotion with oil, shea butter, glycerin, etc. can help hold moisture in the skin. However, since your boyfriend has tried many lotions without success, he might want to consider going to the doctor for a prescription. Also, he should avoid prolonged exposure to hot water, such as in a hot shower, since that can, ironically, ultimately cause the skin to lose moisture.

He should use Palmolive.

One other thing he might try (though he may complain that it is kind of feminine) is night gloves. There are gloves on the market made of silk or nylon that you can put lotion on your hands and then put the gloves on before going to sleep, and it is really supposed to help moisturize very well. My wife sells Mary Kay products and has a special set of hand moisturizers that you can use with these gloves that are supposed to be great. Good luck.

Dude, I can totally identify, having lived in MN and CO for a few years. I think light-skinned folks like myself have it even worse, since we tend to have drier skin. One of my "remedies" is to shut my bedroom door and sleep with a humidifier in my room. I can virtually take a bath in lotion, to little avail, but this really seems to help in terms of infusing moisture.

Taking lukewarm showers is also very good advice, as mentioned above.

Try using Eucerine. It worked for my son. The difference between your boyfriend's case and my son's is he had dry skin every where. Another cream you could try is ......hmm it had cortisone in it... don't remember the name but it was very good (I didn't help you much, did I? 😀 )

Probably too much masturbating...you're to blame for this.

Not sure what the cause is. But my hands at times not all the time though, during winter, the skin will crack and I might even bleed. Also my skin on hands will get really rough and dry. What I found helps is vaseline, to keep moisture in and wearing gloves, even if I go out for like 5 min out into the cold. Using vaseline helped, I would put it at night. Best of luck.

That lady who said Eucerine is good is right. For the areas that are actively cracking, try using this ****e called bag balm. it is actually something that farmers use on cow's udders when they are all chaffed and f'd up, but dancers use it on their feet, because a lot of dancers get cracking between the toes, and it helps. If circulation is a problem , Dr. Andrew Weil suggest more excercize, especially walking, and doing breathing excercizes religiously.

Also, there is a substance called NaPCA. It is a natural sodium found in human skin that draws moisture into the skin out of the air. Old skin cells have approx. only 1/2 the NaPCA that new skin cells do. The stuff is neat-- it doesn't just seal off one's skin from the elements, it actually draws moisture out of them. "Kiss my Face" makes a lotion with NaPCA in it, maybe worth looking into.

I'd definitely siggest the excersize, Eucerine/Kiss my Face stuff, and bag balm for cracking areas.

Cheers, and good luck.

Bag Balm is great. Some people don't like the scent, but it really works.

If you try Eucerin - make sure it is the cream, not the lotion.

Creams with Shea Butter in them are also very good!

Actually putting aquafor on at night, and then covering the hands with cloth gloves works great. My brother had a severe case of this (his hands would actually bleed due to the excessive dryness). The gloves are just to keep the aquafor from getting all over the place while sleeping.

My boyfriend is visiting me here in Michigan (from Hawaii). Ever since he came here, (two months ago), his hands have been sweating, and are always cold and clammy. They were never like that in Hawaii. It seems like it must be caused by the change in climate, but I don't know. They haven't cracked or peeled, though.

Try Corn Husker's lotion as well--no scent, not greasy, and works like a charm! 🙂

Get a humidifier at home, that helped me.
