Hey everyone,

I'm new to this website and it seems that people have given some awesome advice so I was wondering if anyone could help me out here. I was wondering what my chances are of being accepted to a US Medical school with my stats so far. Its my senior year and I don't see myself dramatically affecting my GPA and I'm happy with my MCAT. Also, what types of schools should I be applying to? I also have a question regarding leadership - would coaching summer soccer camps count? Any help would be very appreciated!

Looking good. You may need to add in some volunteering/service activities, but the MCAT looks good and the GPA is good enough to get you in.

All this assumes you're applying next cycle. If you are applying this cycle, you could take a chance if you have the cash, but you're golden if you have another year to add in that volunteering aspect of your application. Best of luck to you!

You have an excellent chance at an allo acceptance with a very solid application, except possibly for a lack of community service (which you may have but didn't specify). I would hope that you plan to apply early next year. If you'd be satisfied with any school, you probably could get in somewhere this year.

IMO coaching summer soccer might be leadership if you are coaching your peers, but if you are coaching kids, I'd call it teaching, tutoring, or mentoring. You already have a leadership position anyway.

For ideas of where to apply, look at the School Selection spreadsheet stickied to the top of this forum, plug in your numbers, and see where you'd fit best. Then get an MSAR and research each school to be sure you'd be happy there. Also use SDN school-specific threads to get more information about each school.

Thanks for the responses! Just to clarify, the Clincal Care Extender Program is my volunteer/community service (240 hours over a year and a half).

Also, I forgot to put this in there. My freshman year I had a 2.7 GPA. I received a D+ in Gen Chem 1, retook it and got a C-, and received a D in a Bio class, retook and got an A during my sophomore year. Will this drastically affect my chances?

Quick question - which UC?

On topic: Your stats are looking superb - i.e. good enough to get into a US med school.

Most schools will not accept a C- in a required course. You'll have to retake Chem 1 or take an advanced inorganic chemistry course like Analytical Chemistry since a year of general/inorganinc chemistry is required(2 courses). It's kinda late to apply this cycle so you have some time till next year to remediate to your chemistry problem. Otherwise your GPA and MCAT is solid for most US allopathic schools.

Thanks for the advice. I have time to retake that Chem course. I was wondering with my current stats, what are my chances of getting into a CA school being that I am a CA resident?
