I need some advice… I applied to medical school last year with a 504 and 3.97 GPA. I graduated undergrad in 2022 with a strong background in basic science research and focused much of my time and effort in the lab where I compiled manuscripts, presented my work at conferences, and was actually a third author in a publication.
I didn’t receive any interview invites from MD or DO. Granted, I only applied to 2 DO and had no shadowing experience with a DO. Since the last cycle, however, I have increased my clinical hour experience to 2000 + hours, working as a clinical research coordinator and phlebotomist, and I have extensive hours now volunteering with women who have been incarcerated, teaching them life skills every weekend. I also have experience volunteering in a refugee clinic, so I have a deeper understanding of the disparities faced in my community. The amount of physicians I have also shadowed since last cycle is six in comparison to the one that I shadowed prior to submitting my application last year. I also have two letters of recommendation from physicians this time around, something I didn’t have before.
I hired an advisor and they strongly advised me to retake my MCAT if I wanted to be competitive, so when March came around of this year, and I realized that I was probably not gonna have a chance with any medical school, I buckled down and began to study for my MCAT. I took it in July and just received my score today, 507. My advisor told me that my chances of getting into an MD school are very slim and that I should focus my efforts on DO. I am, an ORM female, however, I come from immigrant parents who fled a war torn country. I speak three languages.
I know this is a lot, but I just would like some advice on who to send my primaries this time around. I submitted secondaries for 3 in state schools already, but would really hope to shoot my shot at OOS MD, if possible. Please let me know what you recommended for my situation. Thank you!!!
