Hi!

I just took the DAT and got

Bio 22
GChem- 21
Orgo- 19
QR- 20
CR- 19

AA- 21
PAT- 24

I have a 3.5 sci, 3.4 overall GPA with a bio/economics double major from an ivy league school with rampant grade deflation. I have about 100+ hours in dental office work, a summer spent researching at a dental college, and midst of co-authoring a paper right now.

I'm applying now, so I actually haven't even sent out my primary cuz I plan on taking 1-2 yrs off between undergrad and dental school and I didn't know whether I was allowed to defer admission. I still don't really know, other than it probably depends on the school.

I want to apply to UCSF, UCLA, UOP, USC, Baylor, San Antonio, NYU, Colubmia, Penn.

Any idea what my chances of an interview are?

According to what I have seen at SDN and predents.com, you have a good chance to get an interview from any school. However, applying this late can hurts your chance badly. And since you went to east coast for college, I assume you are no longer Cal resident. So, your chance at UCSF and UCLA drops somewhat.
p.s. I heard you can defer admission at NYU.

None of us really know, just looking at numbers doesn't guarantee an interview anywhere. Take Case Western for instance, many people with lower scores are being interviewed while higher scored people are getting rejection letters.

If you're taking the time off anyway, just plan on applying early next year. From what I've heard deferment is only offered in the most extreme circumstances.

Also, your scores don't look right....you sure you didn't mistype one of them?

Ah I see.... I really want to take some time off to travel and do stuff like Peace Corps to because I heard its kinda difficult to take time off between school years and once you graduate, it's time to start working.

I figured that I would try to get in, and defer for 1-2 yrs... is that not likely allowable as PorkChop says?

Btw, i dont remember my AA... but the other numbers were my scores otherwise.

I don't any schools would allow you to defer but its worth a try. YOu even have good scores to apply in two if you wanted to. I had the same question on deferring once I got accepted and I posted it in another forum full of students in dental school already. The majority of response had said that I must have a really good reason for deferring and that it's best just to apply for the cycle that I would be comfortable with. I hope this helps.

You could do Peace Corps first, then apply early for that year that you're ready to go to school. Your Peace Corps experience will certainly set you apart, and you will have your pick of schools to go to.

The winning post. Really, why make up numbers when soliciting opinions ?

He didn't make up a number, he reported what the AA would be on the listed scores in the first post. If you don't understand what's going on, then why post and slam someone? Now that's a winning post! 👎

Dear Porkchop,

22 + 21 + 19 +20 + 19 = 101

101/5 = 20.2

20.2 = an Academic Average of 20, not 21.

not a problem. the poster could well have made a typo, but really, his numbers are fine, and better than mine.

That's the same number that "I like DAT" wrote. DeepNimbus wrote 21 and then stated he forgot what his AA was. Keep up brother. Slow down and re-read the whole thread buddy...😛

EDIT: Damnit, I just got it too. My apologies as you were saying something other than what I had perceived. I'm sorry. You can stone me now! 🙂

I had family members that performed relief work abroad while in the fourth year of dental school, and in the months shortly after. If service work is something you are interested in, you could well wait till the end of your third year or in your fourth to recruit classmates, and plan a weeklong trip to Paraguay, Peru, etc. You don't necessarily have to take time off from school.

As to whether or not it's allowable, check in with the school's respective policies. I know medical students can defer a year for personal or volunteer reasons, and it's not like the Peace Corps is a yearlong vacation in the Caribbean.
