Hey all...congrats to all that have been interviewed and accepted!

I'm a senior right now...planning on taking a year off. I'll be applying this June for 2007. I was just wondering if I could get some input about my chances in getting into DO school.

GPA: 3.11 (with an upward trend) 🙁
MCAT: 27P 😕
Extracurriculars: Pre-med club, Beta Beta Beta National Biological Honor Society, Hospice volunteer, Emergency Medicine Research, Ochem/Bio tutor, Physics TA, Shadowed MD (1.5 yrs), Shadowing DO (about 3 months so far), college crew team, varsity golf (2yrs), Freshman orientation leader and ambassador, circle K member, undergraduate immunology research. Will be travelling to Peru on a medical mission this summer.

That's a quick rundown of my profile...I will also be getting fairly strong rec letters, but I don't know how heavily weighted those are.

Thanks everyone.

I think you should do well, apply early and to a handful of schools that you really like. Make sure you write a powerful personal statement and do a good job on your secondary essays. If you can, retake a few classes over the summer that you did poorly in, they will replace the poor grades in AACOMAS GPA and can help a lot. Good luck

Nate-- thanks buddy. I don't have to retake classes at my university right? It turns out that I didn't know I wanted to get into medicine until about the end of my sophomore year...and by then the damage had been done.

My science GPA is a 3.3 and my non-science GPA is a 2.8, so you know which classes I took my freshman year, haha. It would probably be a good idea to retake some of those.

Also, I've taken a few classes at community colleges over various summers..would the GPA earned in those classes count in my AACOMAS GPA? Thanks.

As long as the classes taken in the community college were college level classes at an accredited school they will count in your GPA, I took half of my credits in CC (did my AS first). You can retake the classes in a different college as long as it is the same class, call AACOMAS to confirm.

Thanks again for the prompt response...and I apologize for shooting back with more questions...

If I do decide to retake classes, it would delay my applications by QUITE a bit... considering I plan to apply as soon as the cycle starts, as I should be, considering my grades and MCAT. What are your thoughts? Thanks again Nate.

hey pappy,

good luck with all the apps! I would just apply as early as possible and then take some summer school classes as well as some classes in the fall, while you are applying. This way you will have your app. in early and also be able to update your gpa by the time your secondaries come in july and aug. Then just get the secondaries out as quick as possible. Good Luck.

Thanks DODO...so you can update your GPA via secondaries??? While on the topic of applications...do you just send one copy of your transcripts to AACOMAS? Or each individual school? Thanks...

P.S. With numbers like mine..what is considered 'early' for applying?

I wish you the best! I'm in a similar situation except my EC's aren't as numerous as yours so far...

Best of luck to you too in this crapshoot adcoms call an application process. I've heard to people w/3.0 GPAs and 25 MCATs getting in and have seen people w/ 3.7's, 36R, and two publications and clinical experience get denied...

This whole process is so emotionally taxing that we should all be given some sort of doctorate in stress.

I have a below ave gpa (for admitted applicants)
and an mcat of 25 (average)

would I have a chance?

There is only one way to find out.

Guys, don't worry yourselves to death here. Apply and allow the adcoms to judge your app. Look at this with this scenario in mind. Do you feel comfortable with your judgements relating to academic work? Do you feel that your GPA, which may be low due to 1 or 2 semesters, doesn't really show who you are? I feel you need to be confident in yourself as I try very hard to be. Although I have a 3.4GPA at the moment, I know that the few C's I have were due to know really knowing what I wanted to do with myself at the time. Now, I pull mostly A's with a B here and their. Overall I have shown and still showing good trend and hopefully when I apply it will be seen by the adcom.

I believe if you can truly them who you are and what you are capable of you stand a very good chance. Know how to sell yourself both in writing and by speaking. Good luck to all and stick with it since we all know it is a passion for all of us.

Thanks for the advice Billy. My only concern is that usually an applicants hard numbers (GPA +MCAT) usually give a good indication of whether or not the applicant will receive an interview. Now...if you have any tips on writing a strong personal statement and secondary essays...by all means share. Thanks Billy.

Hey guys...i had a similar question. I have a 3.85 overall GPA w. bachelors in BioChem but i only have a 25 on the MCAT. What chances do you think i have. I have good recommendations and good experience. I work as ER Tech for like an year, so i have good patience care experience. I actually didn't apply this year thinking my MCAT was too low and applied to pharmacy instead....but i am kind of regreting.
So....do you think i have a chance next year....or should i retake the MCAT?????

You'll easily get in if you apply to a large number of schools. Don't be selective, however.

Thanks OSUdoc...at this point in my life I really did need the reassurance. As the time towards applying dwindles...my confidence follows. Thanks everyone.

Seriously? Your GPA is great and your MCAT score will get you into many DO schools.

Retaking the MCAT will be a waste of time. You could be accepted to just about any DO in the US with those stats.

Same. I have many C's, D's, and F's on my record, but not in the last two years. I'm mostly an A student, but a B slips in there in places where the work has so much volume. I agree that you need to feel confident in yourself and I do... from my calculations, my GPA averages per year went up from Sophomore year -> Senior Year as: 1.5, 2.5, 3.5.

So we'll see. When I apply, I'm going to give the process my very best and let the cards fall where they may. That's all I can really do.

im applying right now, and havent heard anything (i mean primary app was sent in october and 2ndary up till last month) and I just sent my do recs last week for the schools that needed em.

im afraid cuz of my low gpa. i guess i should be confident.

should I retake the mcat for this april? do u think its worth it?
ive been studying on and off just in case i may need it

but id rather get an interview now.

im keepin my fingers crossed
