Hey everyone, I'm just trying to see what my chances are for an acceptance into an allopathic med school for the 2008 class. I am a reapplicant, and did have an acceptance to a D.O school for 2007, which I was able to defer for 2008. I took the MCATs three times, first time in april of 2005 (26- 10Ps 8VR 8 BS), second time in august 2006 (25- 10PS, 7 VR, 8BS), and finally a third time in April of this year (30- 10PS, 9VR, 11BS), Yes I was pretty happy with that improvement and hope some admissions offices would be also. My science GPA is a 3.63, and my overall is 3.65. I have a very substantial amount of volunteer and clinical experience, along with some research. I am an illinois resident, so needless to say I am focusing on schools in illinois along with some out of state schools which I feel I have the best chance of acceptance, if anyone can tell me what they feel my chances are of at least gaining a few interviews with the chance of gaining acceptance.

Thanks in advance

Your numbers are right in line with the average matriculant. I don't know how you applied last year, but if you restricted yourself to IL last year, you may want to branch out further. State schools generally take very few OOS applicants (Check the FAQ). In general, I would not give them money unless they the majority of their classes are out-of-staters (I don't believe there are any). Also practice your interview skills (tips also in the FAQ). If you are applying for this season, you need to get on the ball as time is running short.

I think you should just take the DO acceptance and go with it.

On the amcas app, there is a section where you have to answer if you have ever been accepted to a medical program. Being accepted and not going will look bad.

seems like you are on par to get some interviews this season. You should have a reason in mind to explain the acceptance to the DO school, but just tell the truth. Definitely use the MSAR and apply outside IL and surrounding, and I'm sure you'll get something.

Not exactly accurate - you are asked if you ever "matriculated" in a medical program...a couple of med schools ask the "ever accepted" question on their secondary (MSSM?), but the issue is matriculation and withdrawal, not merely acceptance and refusal...

From AMCAS:

Previous Matriculation

You have matriculated as a medical school student if you accepted an offer of admission and did not withdraw, or you registered for classes, whether or not you actually attended classes. Answer Yes to this question if you have ever matriculated into an allopathic medical degree (M.D.) program at a medical school regardless of country. Your matriculation status may not be dependent upon registration, enrollment, or the initiation/completion of course work. Check with the medical school if you have any question regarding your matriculation status. Failure to accurately answer this question will result in an investigation. If you answer Yes, you may use the provided space beneath the question to explain why you are reapplying to medical school at this time; this space is 1325 characters or approximately one-quarter of a page in length. You will receive an error message if you exceed the allotted space.

Don't you need to accept the offer of admission in order to defer?
