Hey guys; new here so I thought I'd post for some advice.

First off let me say that I signed up for the Canadian DAT and later realized it was scheduled right in the middle of midterm examinations. My logic was that if I forced myself to just do it and signup, I'd make the commitment to study over winter break and reading break. That unfortunately did not happen and I literally opened the Kaplan book 8 days before the exam. I hadn't done general chem or bio since 1st year although I am a 4th year Hsci major.

I did not read or review any biology or even do a single practice question. I read the instructions for the perceptual test and did one of those practice exams and also did one practice chemistry exam after reviewing a couple topics over the course of 2 days. Going into the exam, I already knew I was writing it for practice and was definitely going to retake it because I know I'm capable of so much more.

Well...I got my scores and I'm pleased with what 1 week of studying/practice did for me. I'm definitely rewriting but I'm looking for tips on how to approach it. Got twenty-two in reading comp, sixteen in biology, seventeen in chemistry, seventeen in perception and eighteen academic average. I'm planning to write the November DAT and actually study this time. haha.

I'm mainly debating which bio guide to study from (cliffs vs kaplan vs Schaum vs others), which chem guide to study from (kaplan vs just doing destroyer practice etc), and which source to study perceptual from (destroyer vs crack dat pat etc etc).

Thanks in advance!

I would never take the DAT as practice. If you know you aren't going to perform well, you are better off rescheduling. Some schools will take your highest scores, some will take your most recent, but some schools will average your scores, thus negating a potentially high second score. Plus, it's expected that you perform considerably better on your second attempt.

I initially intended to take it properly. I actually wasn't aware that some schools take an average of the scores. Is there a list of these schools somewhere? I was under the impression that your DAT transcript will state the number of times you wrote the exam but will only show the school your final score.

You'll have to look at the ADEA guide, or maybe a member here has that info. Your impression, along with others that I have seen here are, unfortunately, incorrect. Some users think that schools will look at the highest score for each section across each test they take. That is also incorrect.
